From next Sunday you will need a ticket, which you can buy tickets at stops or in selected newsagents.

Your ticket must be validated at the stop, not on the tram.

    There are no ticket barriers.

Single and return journeys are a bit more expensive compared to bus and DART. However, 7-day tickets are the equivalent of 4 return tickets and 30-day tickets equal to four 7-day tickets.

Month and Annual tickets are only available through the Tax Saver scheme.

Bus / Luas ticket are available, but Train / Luas tickets aren't available yet.

Student and child discounts are available.

Some ticket types will need special photo ID.

Will there be an annual Rail/Bus/Ticket? At €850 I think you should be able to take the Luas anyway with an annual Bus/Rail ticket.

Your ticket must be validated at the stop?

Tickets bought in the machines are pre-validated and then tickets bought from the retail outlets have to be validated. Now I know there are no validaters on the tram but I have not seen any on the stops. How are the un validated tickets validated?Does the machine validate tickets?

With the Bus & LUAS tickets they have to be validated on the bus before you can use them on the LUAS. I'm going to look like a big eejit just getting on a bus, putting my ticket in the validator and getting off.

Not quite. If you buy a Bus & Tram ticket from a Dublin Bus ticket agent, you will have to validate it on a bus first. If you buy a Bus & Tram (or should it be Tram & Bus?) ticket from a Connex ticket agent, it can be used on the tram without validating it on a bus. I think it can also be used on a bus first. The idea is to encourage traders to become Connex ticket agents, possibly in addition to being Dublin Bus agents.

How come the Bus+Rail is €75 cheaper than Rail ??

Is there a Bus Eireann only annual ticket ?
And is there an option to "top up" existing annual tickets to include Luas ?

Bus+Rail doesn't cover outer suburban rail stations (Travelwide isSwords-Lucan-Shankill or something similar).

I think you can get annual tickets between specific points. I'm not sure if you can get a country-wide one.

That all sounds MAD complicated. Bless those poor tourists who are so used to simplicity :(

Would I be right in guessing that a significant number of people aren't entirely honest when it comes to ticket purchasing/validating or do they have lots of inspector type people around?

Note the 25% is on the Heuston-Connolly ticket only.

Commuters face 25% rise in rail ticket prices
    11/07/04 00:00
    By Laura Noonan

Dublin commuters will have to pay 25 per cent more for monthly and annual feeder tickets from Dublin's railway stations to the city centre when the Luas Red line opens in September.

In a letter to customers, seen by The Sunday Business Post, Iarnrod Eireann said it had reached agreement with the Railway Procurement Agency (RPA) to increase ticket prices.

In early September, monthly feeder tickets will cost €17.50, up from €14.

Annual feeder tickets will rise in price to €175 from €140.The tickets will be valid on the Luas Red line from Tallaght to Connolly station, as well as on the number 90 and 91 Dublin Bus routes between Heuston station, Connolly station and the city centre.

In the letter, Iarnrod Eireann described the increase as ``a slight adjustment''. Barry Kenny, a spokesman for Iarnrod Eireann, said the increased choice available to commuters justified the increase. ``We're not making any money out of this,'' he said.

``The Luas has its own fare structure. We negotiated this new fare with the RPA to ensure a competitive price for the customer.''

Iarnrod Eireann disclosed the planned increases in a letter sent to customers who buy monthly and annual tax saver commuter tickets.

In the same letter, the company said that monthly and annual Intercity rail fares were going up by an average of 5 per cent from July 5. Kenny said that these rises were necessary annual increases. ``We review our promotional fares annually,'' he said. ``They still represent excellent value for money.

``We are facing rising costs, particularly fuel and insurance, and we have to cover these costs if we are to continue to provide a quality service.''

Indeed. Who would want to get the 90 bus anymore? Unless of course all the Luases are crammed.

People leaving from Tara Street can use the 90 and people going to Stephen's Green can use the 91.

Damn, I had assumed the monthly one would be available from a newsagents etc. like the other tickets.
When the LUAS starts running out my way next month I'm going to be getting it plus my regular 2nd bus to work, so that's going to set me back an extra €7/month having to buy 4 * 7 day tickets :( (I can't get the monthly ones through work)

You can still get 30 day tickets, just not "monthly" ones.

Thanks, I assumed they were one in the same, the cost is same etc. on the site.
I just hope it's worth the extra compared to the €15 euro ramblers I get at the moment :)
Although the thoughts of not having to sit on a bus on the Naas road during rush hour traffic again on my way home are getting more appealing by the day.
