Its getting out of controll,I just heard a add on 2fm for a concert (some Oprah singer) for 105 Euro, thats just crazy. And with "Madonna" tickets on sale for 88 Euro we are getting close to all tickets being around the 100 mark.

Madonna is on her way out, almost in the 'Where are they now' pile, and still has the cheek to ask for 90 yoyo's for a ticket to stand and watch her wrinkled carcass writhe around a stage for an hour or two???

I hope she slips and breaks something!!

Bit of a generalisation there, although I can see yer point. What you'll tend to find is that the bean counters at the gig promoters office will do their homework and work out the target audience, spending power and what they can get away with charging.

Opera folks will tend to have a few bob and can afford that money. Madonnas core audience will tend to be more mature and can probably stump up the money, although I can't help but gleefully notice that they may have pitched the price a mite too high, as there are still tickets available and the punters may have said 'nay'.

Part of the problem with many acts playing in Ireland is that there are no economies of scale to be made. In other words, the RHCP play 3 venues in the UK for the same promoter, so once they get the entire band/crew/stage onto that island, the promoters can split certain costs over the price to be charged on separate venues.

In Ireland, one off gigs tend to mean that ALL the costs have to be absorbed over one gig, which may well push up prices a tad.

I don't doubt that certain gigs are a rip-off, but it's not all due to MCD....

I agree with grumpytrousers here, promoters do research the concert demographic prior to pricing so the price they release is one the market will hold.

However I reckon they got it way wrong with the 'You’re a Star' concert earlier this year. Now I do not have concrete evidence but I reckon it was a bit of a bust.
This concert involved the 7 finalists from the 'Your a Star' TV talent show, so basically a concert by them would be little more than Karaoke.
    Tickets were €33 approx.
The people that would attend this concert are IMHO predominantly pre and early teen girls, and a few lads. So if you are a parent of 2 of pre\early teens then you are paying €99 to see Karaoke
The show was originally to be held in The Point, however it was move to the smaller venue of the Helix shortly after it was launched. Sales must have been going badly

€33 to see Karaoke, now that is a rip off.

Golden goose shat on the promoter, innit!

I'd agree with you in principle, but you're using a bad example with the RHCP. Was 80,000+ punters not enough to help keep the prices down this year and last?

Probably old enough to lose a hip!

Bob Dylan was even more, I think when he played here the promoters were looking €150 or something even more ridiculous.

I saw dylan in pearse stadium in galway on sunday and he was only 59.50.

Gary moore stole the show though

"Only 59.50", see that's the problem right there.

that was a large venue, and they still charged that.

when did they get so dear....I remember when I went to these things in the mid 90s (I am 24) you would pay 19/20 Irish pounds even taken into account the euro that is some rise.

the cheapest was 22 euros to see biffy clyro supporting hundread reasons.

this just shows that you don't have to pay loads of money to see a great gig

I remember listening to a very interesting radio interview with Harry Crosbie (half owner of The Point). The topic turned to ticket prices and Harry was explaining how it is purely the band who determine ticket prices. The promoter may recommend a ticket price, but the band themselves determine final ticket price. At the time of the interview, tickets had just gone on sale for the Rolling Stones, and Harry was explaining that the show could have made profit at €20 a ticket.

Venues generally charge either a fixed fee or a small percentage of ticket sales. Either way the cost of the venue is usually less than 10% of the overall ticket revenue, according to Harry.

Back on the rip off ticket topic, I was alarmed to hear of the ticket price for the 'Heritage Golf Challenge' being advertised on radio recently. Basically, it is a 4some golf event. 4 players. Harrington, Vijay Singh, Seve Ballasteros and someone else I cant remember. €100 per person per ticket. To see 4 players in a non competitive round of golf.

    Rip off...

    Robbie

Well obviously people are prepared to pay that amount, so it makes sense for them to charge it. I believe in the free market - I wouldnt pay that, but some people obviously believe it's worth it.
