    I am thinking of building a PC based Personal Video Recorder [like the Sky+] using something like Showshifter or XP Media centre
    I need a Hauppage PVR 350 card
    http://www.hauppauge.com/html/wintvpvr350_datasheet.htm

    these are available in the UK, but does anybody know of a Irish supplier?

    Yea the hauppage is great for watching tv but sh1te for pvr-ing:cool: When i was building mine i had a hauppage but it would only pvr with its own software, brought it back bought an aver one ( got e70 back) this one was mono but it didnt matter because its only a mono tuner and the quality from coax is crap anyway u probably wont use it , Just connect the video to comp/s-video in and the audio to line in and instant stero. And as a free added bonous, download girder and the aver plugin and u can use the remote to control your nwe media pc:) .

    Ive had windows mce and didnt like it so i now use myhtpc muc better more stable and countless plugings available including pvr .

    Thast how i am doin it and have been for the last few months no probs

    Google for a list of cards that are compatible with Windows MCE (some of the hauppage range are). Also google for the FireFly remote, very cool for PVR systems...

    I have been looking at building a PVR also, My choice would be a Linux based system like the KnoppMyth
    http://hust.la/KnoppMyth/

    This seems to be compatabile with the Hauppage PVR 350, it also has an open source EPG or Electronic Program Guide, this is needed if you want to set the PVR to record say all episodes of the Simpsons, some units like the Tivo offer a subscription based EPG that costs $200

    But I think that they will be selling PVR's in Power City by Christmas, several manufacturers have launched consumer versions of PVR boxes in the USA, so it might be better to wait until then

    this is a good homebrew PVR site;

    The Tivo is now old technology, they can still be bought from the UK;

    The also require you to buy a subscription for the EPG, I think this is about £200 stg
