External Hard Drive

Im thinking of buying an external hard drive so i can stop needing to burn cds to transfer files to my computer. The main thing i'd use it for would be to take files home from college. A lot of the drives i've looked at say that you need to install software to use them. But the computers in my college wont let u install any programs on them. Are these programs just to allow easy backups or do u need to install something to actually use the drive?

    Thanks for ur help

assuming its a usb hard drive, when you plug it in, the OS needs to install drivers for it to work, this is where the problem is, most colleges don't allow students the privalages to install anything, not just programs....

I use a Firewire/USB combo Iomega 40GB external HD for backup & for transporting large amounts of data. It doesn't require drivers (at least under win2k). It just gets set up as a removal drive, much the same way as a USB keyring/pen-drive would.

But there is the issue of permissions. My g/f couldn't get a pendrive to work on her machine in work because she didn't have permission to add hardware. So you mgiht get nailed by that.

Make sure you get one that is powered off the USB port if you're using it in college. (this means you'll probably be restricted to laptop-size drives.) I got an emagic 2.5" enclosure for about 30 quid off Komplett. I stuck an old 5GB laptop disk into it and its working a charm.

I was thinking about it and was wondering if it would be worth my while just buying an iriver 40gb player and using it as an external hard drive. My mate was saying that his ipod didnt need any software to use it as a hard drive so im hoping thats the same for the iriver. Its a pricey solution but i was planning to buy one in the near future anyway.
