Hard disc failure

My hard disc has stopped working. It sounds like a mechanical problem as it is making a clicking noise. I suspect that the disc itself is intact. I got a new disc as I needed a working PC urgently. My question is:- Is there anyway I can retrieve my data files from the old disc which is now sitting on my kitchen table? Is there anyone who specialises in this type of service?

is the disk working at all

i had an IBM drive do that but this worked for me

leave it off for half an hour thenplug it in as a slave and start cuting and pasting important stuff over to the good disk, once it hits a bad spot it will start clicking but should time out eventually, then skip the file it got stuck on and carry on

Put it in a plastic bag inside a frezzer for one or two hours and that should give you a couple of extra hours of life, then just do what mukki said.

Thanks for the tip, but unfortunately, it doesn't work. Any other ideas?

    Hi gnol.
I lost a couple of IBM deskstar disks this way (with data), learned the hard way to back up to CD's. ( Even a once-off backup will save some grief). If it's a click,click--click repeating, on power up then your'e basically f***ed, just bin it. There are UK outfits that will recover the data to CD's, but you're looking at 2K euro upwards.
The disk itself if probably intact, with head(s) gone bad and trying to recalibrate (click-click), needs a clean room and skilled time to sort out.
