Just saw "The Fifth Element" on ITV. Had a long day working, and sat down to switch off for 20 minutes with a coffee in front of the TV. Caught the start of the film, and, though I am not at all a TV or movie person, I really enjoyed this immensely. Couldn't switch it off at all. Complete and utter chewing gum for the mind, but immensely well done. Great stuff. A very enjoyable few hours. Long time since I've enjoyed a movie as much as I enjoyed that one.

Not to mention the fact that Mila Jovovich is utterly stunning, even with the orange hair.

Fantastical film altogether, and a strange one from Luc Besson(he of Nikita and Big Blue fame).

    So vivid and action packed.

I thought it was comlpete ****e, really badly done. Hated the "comedy" element... the silly costumes and hair cuts. I just thought they got everything wrong.

    o well...

I cant see why anyone could dislike this film... its done in such a light hearted "I know I'm a blockbuster and I like it" kinda way...

the story is run of the mill sci fi good/evil...
the acting is meh ...(apart from Gary Oldman and Ian Holm)
the effects, as in every blockbuster, are very good

    and the ridiculous costumes....hahahahaha

    how can you not laugh.

I just dont like half serious sci fi, find it unbearable. Hate the comedy btis in both of the recent star wars films for example, I just dont think the two genres mix if it wants to be taken half seriously, if its a complete spoof then It can be good.

Pure entertainment. Completely silly but theres nothing wrong with that. Soundtrack is great too.

so basically you like Space Balls and Alien

most other sci-fi films are somewhere in between

have to say I agree whole heartedly here, class movie

pure ott fun, with some hot euro-models and gary oldman on top form.

If you take this movie as a hollywood blockbuster, then what you say is understandable, but this is a pure french-style movie.
i'm serious its complete eurotrash, its humour is VERY french in style, all those exagerated facial expressions, "crazy" charachters and hot models.

    but i still like it.
hey if you havent seen it, check out besson's masterpiece LEON
    (not the pig farmer tho)

    'tis class.

p.s. im not trying to sound pretentious here, just putting it into context

heh I have Leon on dvd , tis indeed excellent.

Yea I do like Alien and Space Balls....but then again I like Star Wars , Starship Troopers ETC I guess I just found the serious bits of "The Fifth Element" more laghable that the jokes

Although I did like the whole -automatic points on your licence- thing , that was cool

Have to agree on the Leon front, it is Besson's best film and one of the best movies involving assassin types I have ever seen...

He is actually thinking about doing a sequel, although after hearing about the transporter I would hope he would take a more serious tack on making this one, Natalie Portman is supposedly going to reprise the role so could be interesting

    Tusky,

you didn't take 'Starship Troopers' seriously now did you? I thought it was hilarious, Melrose Place/Beverly Hills 90210 in space basically. The whole film was a piss take.

And a great film at that, I'm a proud owner of a Region 1 Special Edition.

yes i must agree the Fifth Element is most excellent ........... :D

    <<<<<

Kick Ass Sci Fi, slightly serious but very funny and very weird in a original French weird kinda way. I think this is the 90's Blade runner and nailed prefectly what the future might look like.

Worth seeing as well for the Space Diva Opera singing thing alone.

the Hover cars, wacky haircuts and outfits, Mila Jojovich and Gary Oldman on top form a must see.

    Oh and supergreen!

    Have to disagree.

Have you seen Nikita? - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0100263/

The original french one with subtitles. Is one of thee best "films". Also pure french-style as someone else said.

You'll recognise Jean Reno from Leon .... as Victor nettoyeur.

I think Leon is Excellent, but Nikita is the source.

besson is a genis either way. anyone see the extended (US) version of leon?

they cut out some of the slightly weirder encounters the girl and assasin had in the euro version.

didn't add too much to the movie except to cement their closeness a little more, but interesting stuff all the same.

I Just bought the 2 disk set on cd wow for 8 pound...I really love that movie. I know its flawed and if you dont like Chris Tucker, well youll turn it off. Its in my top five movies with it Leon. They are both movies i will watch over and over. Fifth element is magic and the theatrical performances really give it an edge. Love it to bits

yea! I saw it! they cut a lot of scenes! lots of interesting ones!

I think they cut "leon and the girl on the job" scenes to maintain leon's mystique

I enjoyed Fifth Element because it was different to most Sci-Fi films. Has a really unique visual style and some cool touches. I have to say that the costumes are rather well suited to the movie and Gary Oldman does some of his best hamming outside of Leon.

But please, someone execute Chris Tucker.
