guitar lessons

Alright ive been playing 6 months and i thought i might get some lessons to get me past the beginner stage (advanced beginner). I know all the chords, barre chords (well major/minor/7th) have reasonable finger dexterity (for a n00b), can play chromatic exercises at 100bpm 16 notes but i practically know no full songs cept a couple of nirvana's just alot of parts out of alot of songs.

Does anyone know anyone who gives lessons in south dublin/kildare/wicklow area? And not just some guy who plays guitar preferably a professional/good teacher, i know the basics already. Also what are peoples opinions
on getting classical lessons? It popped into my head today that i could do them for a 2-3 months to get technique perfect and do normal lessons same time for about 3 months aswell. Should be alright then just want to get to get to the level where i can play led zep/gnr etc.

I wouldn't throw your money away on lessons just yet.
Also, I depends what "sort of music" you want to "learn".

If you were to get guitar lessons, then go for classical lessons first - they'll teach more about "real" music than any crappy "This is: C-G-D-E" guitar lessons will ever do.

Personally, I think you're best option is to simply practice. Learn to be able to move your wee finger all over the fredboard etc.

Is one thing paying €30 for a driving lesson in the instructor's car with his insurance, and another to pay close to the same for a while in his house, when you could be learning the same at home...

If you want to delay getting lessons for a while, an alternative would be to get some guitar tab off the internet. Sites like or Guitar Universe or (The On-Line Guitar Archive)OLGA have loads of songs on them. If you start off with simple songs, (Bob Dylan is particularly easy to learn), you'll find that you start getting used to different rythmes. And the best way to learn is to listen to songs and try to figure out the chords yourself. It's more rewarding, and you remember the chords more easily.

You both seem to missing the fact that i already know all the chords, im the past the initial beginner stage, ive no problem whatsoever with barrechords, and im getting used to the some of the awkward 7th type chords that require alot of stretching (7,m7,maj7, mmaj7). So the lessons im looking for wouldnt be just showing me chords etc.

I also have no problems with riffs (blackdog, paradise city, muse - plug in baby etc). I also know some licks although not alot, hardest one probably is the fast bit in the intro solo in fade to black, although im still a good 10-15% under full speed)

The reason i need lessons is that i think i need alot of help on timing/rhythm, my natural rhythm is quite crap it took me a good few months to be able to figure out rhythms by ear and if the song has any complicated strumming it takes me a good while to figure them out. As far as techniques i cant mute to save my life, probably one thing if i knew how to do properly i might sound half decent. The only muting i can do is a few muted strums inbewteen chord changes. I cant palm mute or just use good muting in general playing. I know giblet and he can play a very easy song and it sounds so much better than me just because of muting i think (probably does more stuff i dont notice).

I just think taking some professional/classical lessons for a couple of months would get me to an intermediate standard and from then on i could do my own thing and if i have any problems ask fiblet mcgiblet. Just get my rhythm playing sorted and learn a few full songs which are 'hard', i could probably tackle solo'ing on my own or with minimal help.

Man, the reason you're as good as you are after 6 months (3 months of my help) is because I am a good teacher. Teachers who advertise are usually rubbish and have their own agendas.

He's right though, his ability to pick up rhythm is appalling.

I don't really have the time to teach him more, but I've said loads of times that he should learn himself and expose himself to more music.

I'm not looking for an argument here, but I think this is very bad advice.

A professional teacher will tell you what you're doing wrong and how to correct it. You can't possibly do this yourself without knowing what you're actually looking for, and all the tab and advice on the internet won't help you there. Practicing without tuition will just reinforce the bad habits that compromise timing etc. When you get lessons later on you'll be slowed down by having to unlearn everything first.

This is the perfect time to start lessons, and I'd strongly advise it. You can learn perfect technique without necessarily learning in the classical style, that's really up to you. I think the basics will be the same either way. I know an excellent teacher in Leixlip (he teaches comtemporary and classical). If you're interested, email me eoin@avaricestudio.com and I'll send you on the contact details.
