i have a 40gig hard drive that seems to have stopped working.
The bios will recognise the hard drive, but the minute windows tryed to read it(when booting up) it runs like a scandisk program on it and it goes for hours,
it finally loads up windows but then it still can not access it at allllit just stalls....

    Any ideas?
I just want to get the information off of the hard disk....

something like this might help. although if windows is on
the same drive you might be better off putting the disk
into another machine and run the s/ware from there..

Try the drive manufacturers test/repair tool. Most of them are linked off the UltimateBootCD homepage. The tool will boot off a floppy and run diagnostics (be careful of the destructive ones) and possible repair the drive. I've had quite a bit of success with these tools in the past.

You could also try mounting the drive with another OS. A linux boot CD or floppy would be good.

If this doesn't work then your options are:
    1) Expensive data recovery.
    2) Seal the drive in a couple of air tight bags and freeze it. Then take it out of the freezer and while the drive is still cold put it in the PC and try it. (This may sound insane but it works wonders for platter expansion problems)
    3) Hit it off a desk. (last resort mechanical fix)

Both (2) and (3) come with the usual health warnings.

Put it in as a secondary drive /slave in another PC boot of the other computers drive it may take a long while to start but leave it maybe 1 hour or more.
when it comes up with a bit of luck you will be able to se it in windows explorer you can just copy off ur stuff then.
