Can anyone tell me how to get BBC, C4, UTV etc (just basic channels, don't need sky) in addition to RTE in Newport Co Mayo? I am new to the area and have phoned NTL & Chorus who both say the other party covers this area but neither will commit!

    Help!

I'm willing to stand corrected on this 'un, but I'm not too sure how well served that neck of the woods is by either. My folks are from down Mulranny way, and when the old skool deflector system was taken down, they had to go the Sky digital way in order to get more than RTE etc.

I realise that Sky is not the answer to your request for info on UTV and Ch4, but I'm just alerting you to the fact that you may have difficulties.

You could, of course, always take the wild and crazy risk of asking your neighbours as opposed to a gang of idiots on a messageboard...:D

    Dear Grumpy trousers.

Sounds like you are right and I will have problems getting other channels. guess I have to just get out and enjoy the fresh air!

Thanks for the helpful hint about neighbours - I'm not a permanent "blow in" yet, still working the week in Dublin & no neighbours yet as it's a bunch of newhouses but will consider that option should I see one lurking around!

    Cheers,
    Georgia

Your best bet with respect to chorus or ntl would be to order.
If they cannot get a signal from their test antenna on the day of the install, you may not be charged for afair they bring the contract with them on instalation.

You may be in the service area of a deflector.
theres a list of sites and channel numbers at the middle to the bottom of this page here but I'm not sure how up to date it is.

You may need to ask for an aerial installer in the nearest town, but ask around to find the best one.
they will know and try for a deflector for you.
It may even be possible depending on what part of mayo you are in and your height above sea level( aspect etc ie to receive UK ch's from brougher in Tyrone/enniskillen .

I assumed ntl only cover Dublin, Galway and Waterford, be it cable or MMDS? Therefore that would mean that chorus would automatically have the license to broadcast in that area, right?

Btw. Do ntl have an MMDS system in use in Galway and Waterford?

NTL have cable and MMDS in Waterford - covers much of south Kilkenny and east waterford.

I believe Newport has (or had until recently) a deflector service so it should just be a matter of putting a high gain UHF aerial and masthead ("booster") amplifier on your roof pointing the aerial the right way and tuning in. If you Cant get the Newport Deflector try for Castlebar (39, 42, 47, 53, 56 Horizontal) Westport, Balla or Kiltmagh

NTL have an MMDS service in Mayo however it hardly seems to have any subscribers (I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of MMDS aerials Ive seen for it) Im not sure if it covers Newport but given how hilly it is around there I doubt it
