Something that has puzzled me for a while now is this.
Why isn't their any regional parties in Ireland?
In many ways the Independent candiadates are regional. They are campaign on local or single issues. The ones which campaign on local issues generally can be successful.
So why haven't some natural alliances just joined together?

I would love to see a Dublin party champion Dublin issues on a Dublin wide scale. If there were a party that I would feel naturally drawn to it would be such a party.

Finian McGrath TD (IND) and Tony Gregory TD (IND) both have formed alliances in seperate constituancies in Dublin and forced the government. Both these men would make excellent candiadates for a Dublin party. So too would:Cieran Perry - Independent Community Candidate and Joe Mooney - Independent Community Candidate .

The Healy-Rae Dynasty in South Kerry would also poll more successfully if it moved its politics onward as a party and not a family. Likewise all other family political dynasties would be more accessable and would appear to be more democratic and less family business...

Would you lik eto see Regional Parties instead of independent candiadates? 2 votes

No, I love Independents, they champion my local issues above all else

Yes, Regional Parties offer the best representation in a city or periphery

Principally because Ireland’s too small to support the existence of too many parties.

Many independents are independent for numerous reasons. Some for pro-life reasons, so because they’re socialists, some because they got deselected by their parties and they didn’t accept that. There’s very little common ground between them TBH.

Why? They’re still getting elected on the strength of their family names (well, as long as that name isn’t Andrews)? The don’t need to seem more democratic - the hoi polloi seem happy to vote for their dynasties anyway.
