There were two complaints recieved from posters who found it in very bad taste. It's not being unlocked.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,457 ✭✭✭Cactus Col

it shouldn't be unlocked ... it was ridiculus and juvenile

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 633 ✭✭✭dublinario

    Hurrah for censorship.

And a big thank you to the custodians of our moral well-being, who have shown us the error of our ways, and saved us from ourselves.

I don't know what I find more ludicrous. That two complaints from a couple of remarkably sheltered individuals, who were actually offended by something so completely innocuous, overrides the much larger number of contributors who were enjoying the thread, or the fact that somebodies opinion of the thread being 'ridiculous and juvenile' would be a valid reason for censorship.

Tell me Cactus Col, should we send you are posts first in future to see if they meet with your approval? May we only debate topics in which you have an interest?

The fact is that the contentious thread was really called 'Who is your least favourite actor of all time', but that the thread creator decided to be less cliched and boring, and word the title more humourously. It was incredibly tame, and it does not bode well for the integrity of this site that it was shut down.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,513 ✭✭✭Sleipnir

I assumed that when the original poster spoke of defacating on actor's graves he didn't mean it in the litteral sense?
I believe it meants "what actors can you really not stand"?

Maybe Ben Affleck posts on boards and took offence.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,457 ✭✭✭Cactus Col

    It wasn't called
what actors can you really not stand
    or even
Who is your least favourite actor of all time
.. if it had been it wouldn't have been blocked ...

and I didn't complain about it (to moderators, obviously I did in this thread) so you can't take what I said as a reason it was blocked.

the fact that there were only two complaints does not mean that they were the only two people who found it offensive .. . how many people read the thread ... and how many people contributed to it?

Tell me Cactus Col, should we send you are posts first in future to see if they meet with your approval?
    that would be cool

There must be a few auld grannies on boards.ie now.
Why not give them their own forum, you could call it: "The uptight auld cúnts forum".

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 316 ✭✭callmescratch

i wasn't a contributor to the thread and found it pretty dumb to be honest, but it is totally ****ing stupid that it be locked. this is pointless censorship. it wasn't offensive in any way and i'm guessing it's a metaphorical **** they were talking about. why would calling it "your least faveourite actor" have made it any better? are we to tame down everything we post now? simplify every idea to it's blandest and most humourless?

    ah **** it

Personally, I think the site moderators are probably often sad uber-geeks that derive distinct (possibly sexual) pleasure from wielding the enormously nerdy power they possess on this site.

I would further envision that they put on a cape and mask just as they are about to ban someone or lock a thread. It is also quite possible that they masterbate during the process.

p.s. will it be ironic if/when they lock the thread that was created to complain about the locking of threads?

I complained about it.....I found it offensive...

Now as for censorship, I don't agree with it....but everything has it's place...

Those who don't agree with censorship, would you show porn inbetween childrens cartoons? No, I didn't think so....

If you really wan't to have discussions about which actors graves you would like to **** on, then do it somewhere else....

If I wanted to read that sort of thing I could find a million and one places on the internet for it.... I, and others I'm sure don't come looking for it here....

And for those of you who disagree with it being offensive, well if someone is offended then it is offensive...

That example is so far removed from the current topic that it's downright ****ing insulting.

Personally, I didn't care much for the thread myself, but it's obviously just a more humourous twist on the notion of a "Least Favorite Actor" thread. I for one can't imagine what sort of stuck up person would take offense to this, and for the record, even if you do say you were offended, I don't beleive you for a second.

Most of us here are adults, and those of us who are not, have been familiar with the idea of 'Poop' since pre-school. I'd also wager that 99.99% of us here have at least some rudamentary sense of humour, and also that even the youngest of boards members can understand what is meant by that thread by the context it is in and can generally not take everything absolutely 100% literally.

Another thing is that most of us here can differentiate between something that is 'Naughty' and yes, that may offend, and something that sets out to seriously offend a certain person or certain people in the first place.

    Lastly...

    ARE YOU BEN AFLECK!?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,549 ✭✭✭The Brigadier

Well Mr Hungus, what offended me was not the idea of "pooping" but the idea of pooping on someones grave. I have a certain respect for the dead. And when a member of the immediate family has died in the last 12 months, you do have a respect for graves as well.

Depends on the type of porn.

Sorry if I've just offended you, but that's what's called a joke(look it up). You have to have a sense of humour to understand it.

And for those of you who disagree with it being offensive, well if someone is offended then it is offensive...

    I find you're posts offensive.

So you actually beleive that someone on this board, or someone that replied to that thread, was SERIOUSLY going to poop on someone's grave???

Now, I'm very sorry if someone in your immediate family has died, and I beleive that everyone here can symphatise with such a loss.

    But...
If you cannot differentiate between a thread where people express their dislike of certain actors by an abstract situation that is never going to happen, and a very real death of a family member, then the problem is with you.

I don't mean to sound unsympathetic, because I really do know what it's like to lose someone very close...

Lets just say for instance that someone here has a mother who's very ill and might die... Would that mean that all utterance of "Yore ma" must be banned outright in case this one user might see it, and possibly get offended by it?

I think you get my point.

    I don't beleive so.

I don't think anyone here is being selfish but you. It's a simple fact that nobody could've known that the thread in question could possibly offend someone untill you brought it up.

It's you who is taking offense to that thread, and NOT that thread that is being offensive to you. And the sheer fact that the thread in question is so far removed from you personally, I've no idea how the hell you have the gaul to claim that everyone should be stepping on eggshells in case someone takes offense to it. THAT'S being selfish.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,287 ✭✭✭joe_chicken

jeeze, the thread was pretty crap (no pun intended) and it probably wasnt in the best possible taste... but c'mon....

if everthing in bad taste was band Graham Norton wouldnt be able to leave his house (not sayin thats too bad a thing)

if you dont like it, dont read it... its not as if it had "the nicey nice nice thread" as its heading!!!

just to reiterate... it was a pretty crap thread, if it was a half way near interesting thread, in bad taste or not, it probably wouldnt have been banned

taking a dump on someones grave is offensive. i think it's fair to assume we've all got graves we wouldn't want dumped on as most of us have lost people, myself included, and are sympathetic to others who have.

but to take offence to a reference to grave defication, obviously intended to be funny (however unfunny it may have actually been), is clearly a humourless overreaction.

a lot of things would offend a lot of people if we took everything said on the boards personally (not least the rampant homophobia in certain boards  ;)). we all have to employ a sense of humour here and not object to everything that we disagree with.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,730 ✭✭✭✭simu

Some people are waaaaay too sensitive.

Sure, the shít would make good fertiliser for growing flowers and things on the grave - much nicer than the horrible plastic ornaments people tend to buy for them.

Mr./Mrs. Brigadier is being far too anal about this (no pun intended) if ya ask me. Also if we did actually ask 100 people who read the topic and found it offensive, i'd say the yes vote'd be a small minority. Have a sense of humour!

    why not just.....change the title??

    (That can be done, right?)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,010 ✭✭✭Raoul Duke

Some new heading for a new thread for "The Brigadier" to look over and tell us if they're ok with him:

Actors who you'd like to kill
Actors who you'd like to give a good thrashing to
Actors whose mother you'd like to throw into a volcano
Actors who you'd like to take a baseball bat to
Actors who make you want to petrol bomb their homes
Actors who make you believe in satan
    Blah blah blah

The original thread was to show your disrespect to which ever actor you felt diserved it. Going for a dump on a grave is a great symbol of disrespect. And as for respect for the dead....why?? Just because they're dead? Rubbish. If your an asshole while alive, when dead you become a dead asshole.

As for your notion of if one person finds something offensive then it must be offensive....this is just damn nonsense. Half the things that come out of peoples mouths would be offensive if that were the case.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 633 ✭✭✭dublinario

Brigadier, grow up. If you lack the ability to discern between a figurative notion, employed for humour, and genuine intent to go out and sh*t on sombodies grave, then I'm amazed you ever figured out how to use a computer with which to traumatise yourself by reading such horrific, offensive threads.

And calling the rest of us selfish! You have some neck. You, and only one other whinger are wholly responsible for shutting down a thread to which a great number more people were contributing. Many people on this thread have rightly pointed out that the content of the disputed thread was facetious at best, purile at worst. And yet the same people have been vociferous in their admonishing of the act of locking the thread. Why?

Because they recognise the absurdity, and danger, of going down a road of pointless censorship. The whole principal of a forum is to provide a platform, conducive to free and easy debate and conversation. Not a stifled atmosphere of American style political correctness where everybody is walking on egg-shells.

So it is you sir/madam, who should stop being so selfish. Next time you see something you don't like on a thread, something that any moron could tell is not meant at all seriously, kindly do us all a favour and simply stop reading it. Either that or f*ck off to Disney.com where I'm sure you may find stimulation of the kind that will never challenge nor threaten your refined sensibilites.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,982 ✭✭✭ObeyGiant

In fairness, the thread had 28 genuine replies, and still managed to offend 2 people. Which is pretty monumental, in the course of things.

Now, regarding the whole idea of 'censorship' - I'm as much for civil liberties as the next man, but these cries of "YOU'RE STIFLING MY FREEDOM OF SPEECH!" are absurd. This is a site that's meant to appeal to a broad range of people, and has rules to make sure it offends as few of these as possible. So.. taking a look at the charter of the films board (you did read the charter, didn't you?), we see "The making of potentially defamatory, off topic, disruptive statements such as incitement of hatred, racism, sexism or violence is subject to alteration or deletion". Noone but the most annoying libertarian could say that these rules are too strict for a general-access site, agreed?

So, with that in mind, let's take a quick look through the thread in question.. we have people calling Drew Barrymore a "stupid bit&#99h", and someone saying they "hate Renee Zellweger (sic) so much, they can't be bothered spelling her name right", which are slightly offensive, but nothing out of the ordinary for the film board.

But then we have someone saying "No actors, just possibly on the graves of the mothers and fathers of anyone who has posted in this thread, myself excepted". Now, don't you FREAKING MORONS think this is highly offensive to anyone who has just lost a parent? No? Am I so out of touch with the man on the street that I think this might be a little.. over the top?

    Christ, guys. Let it rest.

*sigh* Of course this sort of thing has to explode when I'm unexpectedly without internet access.

If people have a problem with how I mod this board take it to the admins. It's not like I randomly lock, edity or delete posts. I always sit back and think about complaints before acting on them. I had decided after the first complaint that I would not take any action unless further complaints were recieved as I felt the poster was being a bit over sensitive due to their personal situation. Once the second one rolled in I locked the thread.

I do take complaints serious as they happen so rarely. I think I have gotten about 6 in the last 2 years.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 65 ✭✭Archvillain

well look, I hadn't really intended to start any hassle, I had thought it an innocent enough idea. No laugh riot but a little more distracting, maybe, than if it had been worded differently.
First of all brigadier, allow me to apologise if I offended you. And to express my condolences over your loss.

I was surprised, however, that the thread ended up blocked. I think there are boarders, assuredly, to be drawn around what can be displayed here and what is unacceptable. I understand, also, that things aren't blocked lightly.
Would it not have been possible, though, I wonder to have been given the opportunity of re-wording the thread?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,457 ✭✭✭Cactus Col

just thought I'd point out one thing .... people were saying it's just a humourus way of saying you don't like an actor .... you probably wouldn't have gotten any complaints if you had called it "actors I won't miss when they die" .. or "actors I'd like to maim horribly" ... or a whole plethora of other things ...

however I think that it went a bit too far .... it would be similar to calling a thread about who you thought the sexiest actress in the world is "Actresses I'd like to rape"

See, how is it that it's not ok to make light of rape or vandalising someone's grave, but it's ok to jokingly refer to horrifically physically harm them? I mean, by natural extrapolation if one of these is offensive then all of them are. Personally, given that the entire point of the thread title was to suggest how little respect for an actor the poster had, I don't see how anyone but someone oversensitive could interpret this personally.

I mean, it's not like anyone was saying "hey, lets go out and deface graves for the craic of it!" Nor is it really possible to interpret that as the implied meaning of the thread. Choosing to interpret the thread as such strikes me as the act of someone unable to differentiate between a general suggestion (which, admittedly, was in what's generally regarded as poor taste - but then there's no legislation concerning this, and the thread was at least honestly titled) and a personal insult or threat. How else can you go from "actors whose graves you'd like to crap on" to "How dare you! That's just the same as threatening to crap on *my* grave/my mother's grave/whoever".

Yes, admittedly, someone who has recently been bereaved might feel sensitively about the topic. They probably feel sensitive about anything related to death, because they've just suffered a massive loss, and making any kind of joking reference to death or its related topics will strike them as callous. This is the natural reaction to such a loss.

But, on the other hand, this is a board about films, not a board specifically about being compassionate to the recently bereaved. I mean, what next? Do we implement a policy like the short-lived american educational policy rumoured to have been implemented in certain southern states, whereby teachers were not allowed to make any negative remarks about students? Shall we be reduced to talking about actors as "having the opportunity to develop their talents" after a lacking performance? One of the things that makes this board interesting is the free-flowing and occasionally colourful discussion of films and actors - banning threads because one or two people complain will likely detract from this, which would be a shame.

Nobody seemed to get uppity about it or took it seriously at all.

Obviously, I wouldn't rape a girl simply because that's not the kinda relationship I'm after. Preferably, she'd be the one raping me. :D
