Tonsilitis

I have been having sore throats, tonsilitis etc. for as long as I (16) can remember. So badly that I am considering having them taken out, I spoke with a throat specialist a few months ago who didnt see any problems with my throat, but at the time i had little problems with it, as the pain comes and goes. As I write this I have tonsilitis and it is extremley un-comfortable and difficult to eat. So I wanted to ask, has anyone here had their tonsils out? The doctor said I would have a longer recovery time as I grow older, and I would probably be on a waiting list for about a year? correct?

Any advice is welcomed, especially from those who had their tonsils out.

my sister got them out last year, the waiting list is pretty long, but it's worth it. She suffered really bad from them at least 2/3 times a year.
The recovery time is about a week or so and not too bad other than not being able to talk for a while and your throat being raw for a few days, so you'll be drinking your food through a straw for a little while - well worth it in the long run!

I got my tonsils removed four years ago.

My tonsils were constantly inflamed and I had been hospitalised a half dozen times with infection and fever due to tonsilitis, and the pain was almost intolerable and trying to eat or drink was awful. I would recommend getting them removed, as I found that the older I got, the worse the inflammation, infection and recovery. You are in a little pain for a week or so, but its worth it in the end.

The wait for me was 4 years, but I think each Health Board differs.
Get onto your G.P. as soon as you can and get your name down. Some people get lucky and get cancellations.

sorry to hear embee, I'm not as bad as that ...yet. Ive had it id say it least 3 times before which i feel is too much. But if I was to go on the register I would miss alot of school time, and I will be studying for my a-levels (leaving cert equvilent) in the next two years. Also i would usually go to the doctors and get medecine, but I think this time I can bear it and will try to overcome it naturally to see if that has any effect, would it be possible that my body could treat it now and then the particlar anti-bodies etc would remain in my blood? or is that just wishfull thinking?

If you've only had it three times in your life you are very lucky .... there really isn't any need for you to get them removed if that's all that has happened so far ... why put yourself through unnecessary surgery when what you have can be treated with anti - bi's????

well at least 3+ this time (possibly more). Plus its happening more recently, and if its not tonsilitis I would have regular sore throats

I totally understand why you want to get them out.

The pain of tonsilitus is excruciating.

I was 16 when I first got an "attack".

I get it at least 2 times a year. Im now 25.

I also, like you, get sore throats at the drop of a hat.

And I dont like pumping my body full of anti-biotics twice a year.

But unfortunately my GP says that it does not merit getting them out. The only way would be to go private.

Anything you do to make yourself slightly more comfortable bar painkillers? im drinking alot of cofee, but only very mild luke-warm stuff, which helps the irritation, I used to put honey in it which was actually quite nice and helpfull, but we've ran out in this house .

I would be pretty much the same as that & when I went to a doctor about getting them out he said that there was no need as there was technically nothing wrong with my tonsils - I am just prone to infections there ......

    ploease read all of this.
right, i was given the honour of having the worst ever case of tonsillitis!!thats what the top surgen in ireland said to me after the op! he plys his trade in the matter, temple street and the bons.
i went semi private, and if u have to get them out, i think thats the way to avoid the year wait for it.
mine was an extreme case that got seriously f***** up!!
i was 23 when i goit them out
i was 16 or so when they started,. firstly not so bad or frequent and nothing tha a few anti bs couldnt sort out, but they got gradually worse until i was having frequent bouts (every 6 weeks or so).ended up in emergency ward a couple of time with bad infamation.

then it was time to get them out.
i was putting it off for about 3 years thinking that maybe the anti bs would get rid of them once and 4 all, but in reallity, if u take two much of the one treatment u become immune to that treatment and its a waste of time!!
plus anti bs are bloody bad for u SO DONT RELY ON THEM!!!

in your case, you are young and have not had many bad bouts, u might be clear or u might be screwwed! if it happens again, then u can be sure its going to keep on happening.
it is flarred by many things, but mostly strees on your body.
also, bad air, like in an attic or pubs!
also, lack of sleep will flare it!

u should check out a treatment called Rifetech. it aint something ur going to find in a hospital, or gps office or chemist, it works on the basis of electromagnetic shock treatment(i think) and what it does is rids the body of the parasites, yes parasites , that cause our illnesses. to be honest, u probably have a bad dose of worms and its effecting your body in this way.
u need to find one of those natural faith healers, i know a lot of people are pesimistic bout them, but in most cases u will find they are more qualified that your gps(really). (it aint all about prayen and ****), or else use google on the net and search for rifetech, i know there have been around a dozen units sold in ireland.

that will defo sort u out cause u are only in the early stages!
u dont want to leave urself in the situation i was in(although extreme), 3 weeks of hell after the op, with trips back to emergency.
it can be pretty horrible if u leave it too long!

sorry if i scare u, hope u get sorted.

I got my tonsils out when I was about 5. My mother said I suffered terrible from 24hr fevers, 48hr fevers, sore throats and what not. She brought me to two different GPs, the last one recommending getting them out. So they were taken out.

It completely cured the symptoms and I never had any trouble again.

The only downside for me was that my voice was VERY squeaky after the op. It was rather hilarious though. :D

I was the same for years until I got mine out abt 4 years ago. My tonsils were always inflamed and used to ooze pus and even bleed...sorry if anyone feels sick...I was waiting about 2 years. If you end up going private you get most of the money back as tax relief I think so it's not too bad... Anyhoo look go to your GP and tell them that you want a referal letter and at least see a specialist or get a second opionion. Some GPs jst want to give you a prescrition and get rid of you - if yours is like that get a diff one. When I was in college I was always going to the college medical centre cos I was knackerd all the time - they told me it was cos I was in college - I actually had a thyroid problem that was kicking off - 5 years later I lost a stone in a week cos of palpatations - I went to my local doc who sent me for blood tests and now i'm on pills to sort it out...my doc even tells me to call him instead of calling around and paying €45 when I think i need to change my dose etc....!:)

True enough, I had to be hospitalized a half dozen times before anyone put me on a list. On the sixth occasion, I was in hospital for 2 weeks on constant drips as I had been unable to drink, and dehydrated severely, to the point where I was hallucinating. Tonsilitis can be dangerous, particularly when pus-filled boils known as "quincys" appear on their inflamed surfaces. Those things are full of poisonous pus and if that got into your bloodstream, it could be well nasty.

The quincys are foul - it happened to me once that a quincy burst in my mouth.... the taste of that pus had me vomiting for a solid 24 hours afterwards. Many times, a doc in the Casualty ward will "lance" them for you to get the pus away from your bloodstream.

Two weird things after the op - my voice got a little deeper and my gag reflex is more or less gone.

It is entirely possible though that the original poster would be refused his name being put on a public waiting list, as he doesn't seem to have recurring and severe tonsilitis.
You might just be run down. The first place that seems to flare up when you are run down is the throat and ears. Like others have said, tonsilitis is excruciatingly painful... I wince at the sheer memory of it.

i used to get tonsilitus nearly every year it would last about 2 weeks, and would need antibotics to go away

but i found the ultimate cure and have only needed antibiotics once in the last 5 years, i knew within 2 days i needed antibiotiocs as the "tonsil impaled with a jaggaddy piece of glass feeling" didn't go away

    my cure
do this when it starts to get sore..
eat toast, yes eat lots of toast scratch the living huar out of them pus coated balls
    gargle mouthwash,

also avoid eating or drinking any sugary shyte

Aye, after you have them removed in the hospital, they don't give you jelly and ice cream anymore. They give you dry toast and branflakes and thats it, cos they want to encourage scabs to form where your stitches are.

Dairy products and sweet foods coat the throat and encourage bacteria colonies, so thats why they dont give you jelly and ice cream.

Also, one thing that always worked when I got a sore throat was to gargle some lukewarm salted water.... dunno why it worked but it was really effective.

how much salt in the water?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,890 ✭✭✭embee

Well, its not an exact measure, but I would say a teaspoon or so in a mug of hot water, dissolve it thoroughly, then gargle.... I assume the reason it works so well is that salt water is cleansing or has antibacterial qualities.

Gargling Disprin is grand too, if you can stomach the taste of it.

cheers embeeh the swelling went down a little today so il gargle some tonight and hopefully be better when I wake up :D

Also, gargling with TCP (see instructions on the bottle) will help, proving you can manage the smell of it ;)

Just out of curiosity.... does having your tonsils removed change your voice, permanently?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,890 ✭✭✭embee

My voice got deepier and a little husky sometimes....

    Not neccessarily bad things.
