    they are either LAN connection activity monitor if you are on a network.

    or they are the internet connection. They go on and off as data is transferred.

    sorry, most basic answer I can come up with.

    Right monitor is receiving data, left monitor is sending data..... :)

    They are dead handy though - I use them a lot when troubleshooting networking issues to see if the machines are doing the basic 'talking' to each other
