I was looking at this site and see that at present the current UK number one is the 980th song to get to that spot.

so does anyone want to take any guesses as to what will be the 1000th and will the single be obsolete before there is a 2000th number one

The single will always be relevant. Maybe not to the 'industry', but to fans and bands, it certainly allows 'em to show a different side. Oasis, for example, went through a purple patch of releasing singles that were such good value (4 good tunes and no filler).

I'd regard Number Ones to be largely irrelevant though...any idiot can have a hit single - all you need is enough people out on a given day who are behind you. Iron Maiden did it with 'bring your daughter to the slaughter' cos all their fans fancied the idea of a number one. Marillion got a top 20 hit recently 'cos their web based fan club advocated organised buying. Mr Blobby got the Christmas number one in the UK cos at christmas, that neck of the woods tends to get populated by cloth eared numb nutted twonks who wouldn't know a good tune even if it bit them.

Yes, we in Ireland have much better taste and have never ever had a bad number one single. Hence, superstars like Richie Kavanagh, Chris Doran and that guy who sang 'The Knacker' are all lauded with the appropraite praise and single sales relevant to people of their 'talent'.
