That gear is crap.Hooks on lures aren`t strong enough.Pike gags should be banned. The points on those gags are too sharp. Also I would advise any serious anglers to stay well clear of the rods and reels for sale in these shops.Theyre rubbish.

I got one of these in lidl KK today aswell. So cheap who cares if its crap.

Yeah, its guys like you who are destroying pike fishing for everyone.

Have to agree with cosworth. This gear should not be used for pike fishing. The risk to the fish is too great.Gags are barbaric instruments and shouldnt be sold in supermarkets.Had a look at the rods and reels also and they are crap.Just because something is cheap doesnt mean its good value. If people spent a little extra on quality tackle there would be a lot more quality fish left out there.C`mon all you serious anglers out there, back us up.

Hey Cosworth, I wouldn't launch into people so easily - lazygit provided a relevant posting & ok you have your views on the quality, which having now seen it, I would wholehartedly agree with. I dont think there is a place in the market from this stuff & I've motioned the NCFFI to look into it.

Tony_ire's point was I suggest more from a "its so cheap, who cares if it doesn't last long" rather than a "I don't care about the fish welfare".

We're trying to encourage responsible fishing in Ireland and it would be far better to educate people by saying, please beware as this stuff can cause harm to fish rather than "Yeah, its guys like you who are destroying pike fishing for everyone".

I arrived home from my holiday in Greece to find the first 2 items in the post above waiting for me.

The little bag of spinners, plugs and spoons are far from pike fishing material and would only really be suited to perch.

The big box has quite a lot of useful content. With the exception of the obvious..
Most of the floats are crap, only about 2 of them will be used in my box.

The following will see regular use.
The rod bells for the tip of my ledgering rods.
The Rod stand (After a brief test it looks OK)
    The ledger weights
    The split shot
    Link Swivels.
    Line (nail) clipper
    Long nose pliers
Night Lights (although the red ones are rather poor)

    The following will be binned
Pike gag (you can get their mouth opened much more easily, and wider, by gilling them)
    Plugs
    Most of the floats

    guys,
its not that easy to gill fish that you can barely hold
i dont think gags are that bad, my family have used them for eternity.
all you need to do is wrap sellotape around the parts where the pike clamps down on.
If a gag is barbaric then so are treble hooks, which everyone uses to catch pike.
I would even say that they can do more damage to the pike.

So does everyone flatten down the barbs on their spinners?

If the fish is tired when landed, and if played properly she will be, then they are usually too tired to give up much of a struggle when theyre on the bank.

Personally, and in an ideal situation, I'll lie the pike on an unhooking mat and kneel down with one leg either side of her. Gill her and go in with a long nose forceps.

And yes I crush all the barbs on my trebles, with the exception of 1 on each treble on a deadbait rig so that the bait stays on during the cast, this also makes the unhooking a lot easier.

i was talking about spinners, not trebles...

in an ideal world you would turn the fish upside down etc...
its always that easy in practice, and something nearly always has to be entered into the fishes mouth to keep it open..

By gilling a Pike I mean sliding your finger/hand up from the outside of the pikes gill.

This causes the pike in most cases to open his mouth making the unhooking task much easier.

    dont attempt to patronise,
i know what gilling a pike is.

Not attempting to be patronising at all. Apologies. Personally I've found it getting easier recently, and can be difficult as well as intimidating when learning to do.

I must have misread your post where you said
in an ideal world you would turn the fish upside down etc...
As I am unsure what you mean .. there should be no need to turn it upside down, I would keep it on its side.

I also find that the bigger the fish the easier it is, because they have bigger mouths so there is more room for you to get it at the correct angle with the forceps.

Turning a game fish upside down for unhooking seems to be all the rage in the States at the moment - supposedly it disorientates the fish.

I personally wouldn't fancy turning a 20lb Pike on its back and trying to unhook it - not enough 'balance' for the fish & as we all know, they are prone to suddenly finding burst of energy as the 3 inch scar on the back of my hand will provide testamount to. Albeit one nick in 25 years, so I'm not complaining.

I guess its down to personal preference - how you best feel comfortable handling the fish will probably fare best for the Pike's welfare. I personally prefer to gill them, lay them on their side on a good unhooking mat (and if gags should be outlawed - which they should, unhooking mats should BECOME law !) and remove the hooks - pref barbless that way.
