Driver screw up - almost certain.

(it's not a dell is it)

Try remove the pen and restart windows.
If it doesn't work try switch USB slots (could be dodgy USB power).
If it still doesn't work do the same thing only with the pen inserted.
Otherwise remove the USB drivers via the control panel and restart windows.

The pen works in oter computers?

its a custom build, have tried different usb slots so no joy there, shouldn't be power as the usb slot is powering something else ok.

haven't had a chance to try it on another pc but i'll try removing the usb ports and have windows install them again, thanks for the suggestion

If this has just happened Now, Restart the PC and all shoudl be well,

    Otherwise drive problem,

    XP should install it AUTO

Do you have the USB2 update from windoze update?

    Thanks JoePC

nah it happened a few days ago and i've restarted a few times since then

i removed all usb stuff from the control panel with the drive plugged out and then scanned for hardware changes where it promptly installed all the usb stuff again. i then put the pen drive back in but got the same message.

all windows updates are installed on the computer and usb 2 is working

    cheers

yeah i was hoping to avoid the format as there is some stuff on it, but it wouldn't be the end of the world if i lost it i'll give it a try

edit i can't format it as when i right click on it and click format it says there is no disc in the drive

treat it like a hard disk and delete and recreate the partition on it.
