RTE naming John Carthy on 5-7 Live.

The Barr Tribunal has been going over the evidence in relation to the naming of Abbeylara seige gunman John Carty who was shot dead by police.

Should RTEs 5-7 Live programme have named Carty or should they have observed an unoffcial black-out along with other broadcast media? I think they got it very wrong myself, he did'nt need to be named and dispite the newsprint using his name Carty was holed up so he never saw that but he had a radio.

I didn't hear or see the relevant pieces I think it was inappropriate, both on mental health and police grounds. What next? Live video feeds of people about to commit suicide?

I think Sky are working on something like that...

Seriously though, from what I know of the issue, they should have kept the name to themselves, there was no reason to tell the public at the time, the cons outweighed the pros severely.

Niall O'Flynn earlier told the tribunal he was not aware that Mr Carthy had a radio in the house with him and could have been listening to the programme.

He said he was not aware of any sensitivity surrounding the naming of Mr Carthy on the day and even though he was told loud music was being played in the house, he presumed Mr Carthy was listening to a CD player or stereo.

What only about eight million radios in the country and they though he might not have a radio in the house :rolleyes:
