To connect up 2 more hdd's to your pc you will need a pci controller card, whether you get one with raid support is up to you.Iv have never set up a raid array so i cant really say how to do it.

This is kompletts selection of ide controller cards with raid : http://www.komplett.ie/k/kl.asp?bn=10209

you can connect up to 4 hard disks if your not married to having a cd or zip drive installed without a raid card (you could get external cd and zip drives too) using a raid card you can connect more hard disks either individually or as disk arrays, but be sure to get a quality raid controller that your operating system will regcognise without a load of hassle with 3rd party drivers and whatnot, can be a pain.

Yea but the cd-roms etc work at a slower speed and will prob effect your hard disk performance. Think a seperate card is a good idea........ you can always use it in your newer PC aswell

I use the two channels of my extra IDE controller (onboard HPT370) for my 120Gb two hard drives, giving each one a full channel for performance. That leaves the standard channels free for three cd drives (cdrw, dvdrw, dvd) and a zip drive.

I find it to be a trouble free and high performing solution. The only issue I run into it that Operating Systems some times don't support installing to drives on the controller which requires a temporary move to the normal controllers.

Personally speaking I'd avoid running RAID arrays off cheap raid controllers and just stick to using the controller for extra IDE channels. RAID1 will waste drive space. RAID0 would give a speed bonus but one HDD failure would wipe out the entire array.

Komplett have cheaper non-RAID alternatives too:
