Recently turned 21 and my parents a letting me do the rally (Rally school Ireland) or mondello trackday.

Problem is i don't know which to choose!

I'm getting the half day but might put some money towards it for the full day.

Has anyone done either or both, how was it and which would be the better experience to go for?

    Thanks,

    Jozi

I dont think you actually mean a trackday as they are where you bring your car out on track with others. Dont you mean a kinda school day?

I have not done a school day but I have done trackdays around mondello and they are fun fun fun... :)

21 and their "letting you do it" or paying for you to do it

did the mondello track day...single seater rover and rover 25......its about a half day altogether....more training than driving...if i can remember correctly....4 laps in the rover 25 and 5/6 in the formula single seater rover.....the rally day actually sounds a lot better IMO

    but its your choice

I know the Mondello setup quite well. Its 4 laps being instructed in a 1.8 Rover 45 on slicks. Then 6 laps driving the instructor in the same car, then 12 laps in a single seater. All briefings etc as well. It takes about 2 to 2 1/2 hours in all.

RSI apparently is the best, if only because my GF works there

yeah I did both. I prefared the Mondello day by far, I loved flying around in the single seater. Although I liked the rally day, its just not for me and the track is too small as you never get out of second gear

Ehh, yes i did, didn't really think about the difference in meaning when i was typing.

Kind of had my mind half made up and go rallying, until i read the replies!
Maybe i'll have to do both, eventually like.

Will see what kind of replies i get here and make my mind up on it.

    Thanks,
    Jozi

    I did both,

RSI -in Monaghan, excellent fun in a Mk II, worth doing.

Mondello was pretty good too, no fun factor though, they don't like to see you sideways in a cart. :D

If its a choice of RSI / Mondello, then it would be RSI. The craic is better, the instructor gave out to me for NOT turning over the car in the gravel trap, "ah you'll do it the next time..." !

    Bring a camcorder....

The reason mondello wont let you go sideways is cos smoother is quicker. Its a school....not a stag party day out.

I've done both. tbh it depends on your personal preference. I preferred the rallying (nothing like going sideways in a mk1 escort!). Even though you rarely get out of 2nd gear, those engines rev to the heavens and it still feels seriously fast. The instructors are lunatics - they egg you on all the time to accelerate longer, brake later, slide the car more. they seem highly competetant and experienced though. Sometimes they'll take you out for a lap as a passenger to really show you how it's done.

The single seater in modello is more of an out and out speed buzz. You can top 100 down the straight in 4th gear, sitting in what are little more than glorified go-karts, so you can imagine the sense of speed. When I did it it was a bit scary cos the track was wet after rain, + those things are rwd and power comes down to the wheels really suddenly. Nothing like barreling down the straight then realising you're still way too fast for the corner and feeling the back stepping out. Probably not as bad in the dry though.

I can't speak for Mondello as I haven't done it, but I have been to the rally school 3 times now. I can do 100 in places in my road car (ahem), but the thrill of sliding a rwd car with a couple hundred BHP under your arse round tight, gravelly bends like a disturbed fish really needs to be felt to be believed.

Sure you don't get to massive speeds but you work your arse off sawing the wheel and controlling all that power to make the fast laps. You get plenty of track time and the instructors really really push your limits and seem to enjoy it as much as you do when you push it and they let you take the cars as fast as you can.

I could go on and on about it but I will close by saying I had a smile on my face for a couple of days after each time I went. I have plans to go again this year, the only downside is that it isn't the cheapest and the track could be a bit longer (though I heard they plan to extend it).

Nobody mentioned the website for it so here it is: http://www.rallyschoolireland.ie
