    And why?

For me it's the Sunday World - I can't stand Amanda Brunker and the paper's trashy "news" stories.

    The Mirror......

I normally read the Sun at 4am on a 15 hour night shift, at that time the sun is the only thing my brain can manage.

I avoid The Irish Independent and The Sunday Independent. I simply refuse to buy them. They are an offence to journalism. Not even tabloid standard journalism masquerading as a broadsheet newspaper. The Independent makes me sick. I hate it. I HATE IT.

Did I mention that I avoid the Irish Independent newspaper?

The Evening Herald is the biggest load of reactionary shite ever. I wouldn't wipe my arse on it if it was the last piece of paper on Earth.

    All tabloids, I hate.

I avoid The Irish Independent and The Sunday Independent. I simply refuse to buy them. They are an offence to journalism. Not even tabloid standard journalism masquerading as a broadsheet newspaper. The Independent makes me sick. I hate it. I HATE IT.

I agree. I hate they way so many of their staff members can't decide if they're models or journalists and the way they always have photos of semi-naked women plastered everywhere (if you want porn, get some on the interweb, says I). They also employ young writers who can't string a coheret line together - it's embarassing to read the stuff they come out with and these people are supposed to represent all young irish people. Argh!

I don't like the Sunday Times much either. The news section is always bulked up with silly stories, they can't seem to make up their minds if women having a career is a good idea or not - they have articles on this topic nearlty every week. Who cares? It's not that interesting a topic anymore! They also bulk the paper up with huge, unnecessary photos and wheneever they're going on about some (usually trivial) social phenomenon, they give the example of how this happened to one named and photographed person as if that were proof that the issue is relevant to all their readers. The critics on the "Culture" magazine are dull and pretentious. The Style magazine is particularly awful in how it encourages people to become image-obsessed dimwits.

Sunday World and Irish Independant. Although I will read the sports of any paper.

Evening Herald. Worst excuse for a paper ever, it has no positive points.

The Sun because of the Hillsborough lies and a million other wrongs. They are scum of the highest order.

    The Sunday Independent grrrrrr

    (a) 80% of it is thrashy tabloid stories dressed up in broadsheet. Who is shagging who in dublin 4 is not national news (it's not even news to *me* and I *live* in d4). And how can you take a "journalist" seriously e.g. when half of the female writers are good looking women who get their kit-off *alot* in the photos that accompany their pieces..? :dunno:

    (b) The attempts at serious journalism are the most infuriating type of UK-worshipping, pro-Bush, pro-Israel, anti-arab, anti-nationalist lies & rubbish.

    The Sun

There is no real news in it (and the ink sticks to your arse)

The Monday Tuesday and Wednesday editions of the Limerick Leader

There is more advertisements in it than news.

    The Evening Echo

I could care less about all their cork news being peddled in Limerick. The limerick Echo should have limerick news.

If there's one thing I hate more than supposedly intelligent people writing stupid stories aimed at idiots (ie, the tabloids), it's idiots writing stupid stories aimed at supposedly intelligent people (the Daily Mail). The Daily Mail is far and away the most reactionary, fascist and downright terrible form of toilet paper known to man.

Ugh, makes me feel dirty just to think of it.

Daily Express or the Irish Independant. Both crap. At least The Sun has its market right, it's just tits and celebrities. However, the Indo and the Express were once broadsheets that degenerated and now seem to think of themselves as "clever tabloids" and therefore don't have tits.

The Irish Times or if not availiable, the Guardian or the Independant (the UK one that is, and not any Sunday ones) are the way to go.

Still waiting for a sunday version of the Irish Times.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,148 ✭✭✭✭Raskolnikov

I avoid; The Sun, Sunday World (and all the other Sunday tabloids), Irish Independant.

Newspaper of choice in Ireland, Irish Times, Irish Examiner or Sunday Business Post. When in N. Ireland, Belfast Telegraph.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,668 ✭✭✭nlgbbbblth

I buy The Guardian every day and The Observer and Sunday Tribune on Sundays

I read the Irish Times and Irish Independent at work. The Indo has better sports coverage (particularly GAA) than the Times but that's about it.

I have a serious hatred of The Sun/Mirror and Star etc

Not too fond of Rupert Murdoch's Times/Sunday Times either

Some no-brainers at work give me grief for reading The Guardian "that English/British ****" they call it - while clearly unaware that it's the most pro-Ireland / pro-Irish nationalist / least jingoistic of all the UK press.

Ironically they read The Oirish Sun or Oirish Mirror - while clearly unaware that the "Irish" tag is an insult and those rags are reactionary pro-British rubbish.

Same sort of guys who would support Celtic [The Plastic Hoops] citing their "Irishness/Irish roots" but wouldn't dream of following an actual Irish club like Shamrock Rovers [The Real Hoops]

shams are scum though.they needed police dogs from dublin to come down with them to the blues game the other night.

anyway back on topic - mirror is an absolute waste of trees. the sun not much better (page 3) the star can be decent enough at times, good sport coverage.
i dont read broadsheets cause they are just too feckin awkward!

ya me too pretty much, I'd be partial to giving the Sunday Tribune a read now and again though, and sometimes The Guardian.

    - The Hedild. What a piece of crap. I used ot buy it years ago but it gradually got worse and worse. The last day I bought it, of the 1st 13 pages, 4 were news sotries and the other 9 were entertainment stories. 5 of those 9 pages related to acts connected to Loius Walsh and co., including a 2 -page 'exclusive on a nobody boy band being managed by Keith Duffy. I wouldn't read it if it were free.

    All of them.

hmm i wonder how balanced the IT is, is it just more honest compared to the others so not that honest really....

i find that broadsheets sometimes try to get around discussing trashy rubbish by having stories that report what is in other papers or reporting on the issues in a "serious" way (but letting you down by reporting on them at all ) or discussing it as the lastest social phenomenom

i don't buy but i'd say the guardian may be the best of a bad lot... better international news

of course the internet and multiple sources for the same story is the solution to the above

oh yes, with you all the way. the real shame is that there are some very decent journos working there who dont credit as the trash fill the papers - thinking of Martin Fitzpatrick in particular who suffers Shane Ross in the business section

Would not put chips in anything from the Indo Group

All tabloids. It makes my blood boil seeing the English rags here with "Irish" stuck in front of them. Someone once said to me that all the news in them was from an Irish point of view - it only took to page 4 before it was talking about "the" government (no mention of British), and "the" Prime Minister, Tony Blair.

    Evening Herald

Cant stand tabloids, and i work in an otherwise all-male workplace so there's always page 3 lying around. the tabloids are just trash. The herald is crap too. I'm also not a big fan of the times because it's got a bit of a head-up-own-ass approach to news.

Thats a bit true OK, but have you ever tried reading the Financial Times? Now THERE's a paper that has its head up to it's ass. You'll find that if it doesn't bore you to death first....

all tabloids, the standard of writing is terrible not to mean the actual content. i also dislike the guardian, it comes across as highly pretentious to me. would mainly read the irish examiner and the sunday independent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,676 ✭✭✭ArphaRima

Irish Independent. And I hate the fact that it is free on the internet and therefore what I read the most.

Tabloid in disguise. Broke my funny bone when it came out in tabloid form. My english teacher predicted that years ago.

    Irish times please.

Personally I don't hate any newspapers. As far as i'm concerned tabloids are the greatest reads for entertainment in respect TO the amount of crap that they publish :)

It's better than most of the comic strips in the newspapers :) Oh and Andy Capp rules
