not really a major problem compared to some others.

Basically I succeeded in getting a job with an IT company in Galway 2 months back. The money is pretty decent for irish standards (thats not being derogatry, the pay scales for graduates vary based on country and sector)

That was grand. I recently did an interview for summer work with a bank in London. I got that. It also has the option of pursuing full time work there afterwards. The money there would be substantially more than Galway, I would say at least half as much more.

What I was wondering though should i go for the bank job if I was offered it and renegede on the galway one. I'm only 22 so its not as if the money is that vital to me. Would I simply just be blackmarked within that company?

Be cafeful. You may go over to London and end up hating it, after already having turned your back on the Galway job. What then? Do you think you'll be able to settle in there OK? It's not Salthill ya now... :(

I'd go for the "You're young, you've got your whole life ahead of you" stance.
    Go for it.
Why not give it a shot? You may like it, you may not. Try it once. Just keep your options open for your return, should there be one...

    S.

/edit - you say there's "an option" for full time work in London. Is that "an option" or "an opportunity"? There's a big difference.

You could talk to your current employer and explain to him what you're faced with. Just lay your cards on the table. If you're expendable, he'll more or less let you know... then London might be the better option.

Either way, a career in finance would be the better option than IT at the present moment. An IT career in a bank would be the better option, moreso.

Normally it's convention that once you accept a job with a company you honour your commitment.

If you plan on taking the job in London (only you can decide which to take) just make sure you contact the company in Galway quickly and explain that you won't be taking up the position. Obviously, they'll be unlikely to consider hiring you again if you renage on a contract considering the hassle it causes them. The sooner you inform them the less of a problem it will be. Just tell them that you have decided to emigrate and apologise for any inconveneince caused.

One thing to bear in mind is: does the pay increase in London justify the increase in price of living?

Good point, if your moving to London make sure you check it out first, go over for a weekend & see the place then decide, as for Galway, Just a guess but the london job would hold more ground woundn't you say....

    Thanks JoePC

Who's the job in Galway with? I wouldn't mind moving back home if you decide to vacate the position.

It's up to yourself. There won't be any of this "you'll never work in this town again" stuff if you bail on the Galwegian company, but from what I can see, you're trading a stable job in familiar territory for an unstable (i.e. uncertain future) job in unfamiliar territory. It could be fun, but it could also be far more stress than it's worth.

As you mention payscales, how does the job in London compare to a similar job in Dublin? London is slightly more expensive again to live in than Dublin, so you may find yourself with less disposable income than you do now.

My advice would be to check everything out before you do anything. Find out how much you'd pay for accommodation in London. Find out the cost of bus, taxi and train fares. Compare it proportionally with what you pay now and how much you make.

Maybe that's just me, I like to be financially prepared. Some people like to just dive in and hope for the best. :)

the galway job is only a graduate programme sleepy :)
I guess you're probably looking for an experienced hire job. If I did take the London job, obviously I would inform the other company immediately. To do otherwise would be pretty bad.

Money wise, judging from one of the other candidates who got a full time position offer for London, its roughly double that of Galway. London ain't THAT expensive, I was working over there (not the same london company) last summer.

Sinecure, its an option. People were hired for full time positions out of the same set of interviews i did. I just chose to do summer work. The option is to take up full time employment at the end of the internship.
