How do people here feel about review magazines an other such film magazines...which ones do you like which do you feel are up their own arses and so on.

I use to like Empire when i was younger. But recently (prob cause i study film much more closer now) i've beginning to disagree with them more often now. Most recent of which was over The Day after tomarrow.

Nowadays i pay more attention to Sight and Sound which is quite good on its articles (it did a brilliant one on horror films last september...) and i tend to look more to the reviews and comments made here on boards and on similar forums (not the most respected review sources but i find them good...)

I rarely pay much attention to online reviews but i like reading about films in IMDB...

The only movie magazine I buy near-religiously any more is Hotdog. It's as close as we have to a modern-day Neon magazine.

Although I'll flick through Empire and buy it if I see anything that grabs my eye.

Sight and Sound is aimed at a whole different demographic, so I guess we can forgive it for its head being jammed so far up its ass.

Empire tends to sway between very good and very bad. Haven't bough it in while but i know people who do so i generally get to read it.
I do buy total film every month though, and have done so for the last 4 years. It's quality has dropped slightly this year, but hopefully they'll get it back.

I read Empire and Total Film quite regularly. I bought Hot Dog once and really didn't like it.

i used to work in a newsagents so i got a taste of all the film mags stocked
i prefer hotdog to empire, the features are fresher and more honest and their covers are unpredictable, which is good.
empire's a bit up its own arse nowadays and gets way too excited over big hollywood productions and what their faveourite big stars are doing this month. they think way too highly of themselves, although kim newman is cool.
i also liked SFX, but didn't care much for total film.
i don't usually buy any of them, i can't afford 6 quid for a magazine

I might buy Empire, or Total Film the odd time. Very odd time that is... Might just pick one up for the sake of something to read on a bus journey.

But other than that, I generally don't read film magazines regularly.

I don't generally purchase movie magazines, likening, as I do, Empire to a poor man's roll of Andrex.
My favourite movie magazine would have to be Movies Plus - it's found free in cineams, places like Tower Records, etc. Anyone else ever read over it? It's quite a handy size too.

I usually read Empire, although not religiously, just if its there, I'll flick through and see if theres anything of interest...

Total Film is dire IMO, it just seems really poor quality for some reason, and I can't quite say why... its just crap.. (I suppose the word tabloid comes to mind, as in it is The Sun of movie mags, while Empire is the Evening Herald... tabloid, but not too tabloid)

I like Empire. I like Hotdog's fresh take, but at them same time, its very clear its demographic is young blokes...
