It is just Eircom's way of saying no to communities while getting good press nationally. Most of the trigger levels could not be reached even if Eircom were bothering to record the votes accurately.

    See ComWreck's expose here:

There was an article in the Sunday Business Post about it as well. I'm trying to find the link.

    Edit: Thanks viking.

are they ever gonna upgrade some of the exchanges that are under the trigger program but clearly wuldnt have the trigger level met?

my town has over the amount of ppl required in the area to have our exchange upgraded but of course with the old census stats eircom dont give a ****

ive got a 499 trigger level, with 9 registered votes!! yipeee, but im just wondering is there any hope for 2005?

The Census doesn't record how many people are connected to an exchange. (Because the boundaries for the census aren't the same as the boundaries for an exchange). So looking at the census data is a waste of time.

The trigger program is mainly a PR scam. But you can be pretty sure that if some town actually does scare up 150 registrations (no matter what the trigger level is), someone in eircom will check it out, and see how many of those registering an interest actually pass the test. If enough of them do, then the next step would be to find out how many of the 150 actually represent genuine interest. If only 10 of the 150 actually dialup to the internet on a regular basis, then the followup might stop right there. Whatever the official trigger level is, if eircom decides that there's enough genuine interest in any given exchange that can generate additional cashflow with minimal investment, then DSL will arrive sooner rather than later.

If it's going to require replacing half the copper in a 4 mile radius, you'll be kept waiting, even if you have 600 people signed up.

Barra means that his town now has over 1500 people . So does Kinnegad but Eircom wont do it either .

Oranmore was done albeit having a population similar to Kinnegad at Census time in 2002 (and a hefty planning pipeline too ), it was done last year . It will have 3000 people by the end of next year. It had 1442 people in its hinterland in 2002 , not all within 4 km either :D . Kinnegad had 1429 .

2 towns have actually dropped in population since the census and now have less than 1500 people but will still be done, I believe Moate is one such.

One potential benefit from the NTL announcement is that it may force Eircom to look at updating some of the sub-1500 towns and villages since they will have a tougher time selling in the big urban areas.

This assumes that NTL can get their act to-gether and provide real competition for Eircom in those areas - a BIG assumption.
