Generic RAM not working - any hope?

On impulse, I bought some dirt-cheap generic RAM for my laptop (Dell Inspiron 5000), but it doesn't work. Neither Linux or Windows will start with the memory installed. Is there anything I can do about this, or should I just put it down to experience?

Go to crucial.com and see what ram your laptop takes then see if you bought the right stuff, Dell lappies are picky bastards.

Maybe you can change it.
