Good mousepads for optical mice?

    Hi folks!

Anyone know of any good mousepads for optical mice?

I recently bought a Logitech MX900 wireless optical mouse and it's quite heavy.. Guess it's the batteries.. But now I find it difficult to move on the normal canvas mousepad - there's too much friction.

I'm looking for a smooth mousepad, something that the mouse would just glide over, but with a pattern so that the optical sensor can detect movement.

I tried the Everglide Giganta Optical mouse pad and it turned out to be a disaster.. It's made of plastic - which is fine, has some reflective bits in there for optical mice - which is fine, but it's got a very rough surface, and the mouse just rattles as you move it around. Really annoying if you're in a quiet environment!

Anyone know of a mouse pad that might do the job for me?

I've heard fUnc 1030 is pretty good, but I hate ordering something off the net that I can't even guess what it looks like... If anyone is in a similar situation and you found a pad that works for you, I'd appreciate it if you'd share your experience :)

I use a freebie/dirt cheap mousemat. It's not one of those plastic ones, but a soft cover one. Works brilliantly. No need for any flashy pattern etc.

Cheapo allsop mousepads are great. Foamy stuff with cloth on top. The cloth bit has some kind of raindrops pattern on it, works nicely with my ms explorer 3.0.

I got one of these when I was ordering my system: Mousepad Speed-Pad Anthrazit . It's plastic and has a rough-ish pattern but it works fine for my Logitech MX700 mouse. Looking at a pic of the Everglide Giganta Optical mouse pad that you used, it's pretty much identical without the silver bits and mine looks to have a rougher surface but I have to say, I don't notice the 'noise factor' :dunno:

This is what your looking for. Its made of glass. You attach teflon tape on the mouse feet and away you go. I highly recomend it. Komplett used to do them seperatly but they only sell it with an MS optical mouse now.

another thumbs up here for the icemat
i think its great, the mouse realy glides will over it and never loses tracking

we want to get technical :)

an uber geek needs an uber mousepad!

heh.. seriously.. there's a big difference between a 5-euro pad and a 30-euro pad, and it's not just the price :)

i spend a lot of time on the computer and want to be able to work and play in comfort. i appreciate the feedback, there's some real gems here..

google-ing around for reviews now.. steelpad, icemat and func look pretty good.

i like the sound of icemat, but it seems to be pretty high.. over 6mm thick.. not sure i'd get used to that. is anyone using one of them here?

    eurm i said i was
the thickness has never bothered me
its not like the mouse is raised above your hand as the surface of the icemat is big enough to rest your hand on it

If you want the best getta fUnc mat, no competition really and seeing as they are only €19 including P&P Here (in the accesories section) you've got no excuse :)

i have heard fUnc are good but have never used them
but seeing as you have used both
what makes them better than icemat?

The fUnc is smoother and not as cold :) get some teflon skates and spray a drop of Mr. Sheen onnit and the mouse will practically slide off the mat with the slightest touch :D I'm just more comfortable with the fUnc for some reason and so is everyone who has used one I think you'll find.

Ya I have one of them as well. It's a great mat. I'd take it over an ice mat any day. Ice mats I find are too noisy without the teflon strips and they can get really cold in winter unless your house is like an oven. Icemat is right.

You can't really go wrong with any of the good ones, func, speedpad, icemat. The're all good. It's just a matter of preference. I prefer a slightly textured surface so mine suits me. The func has both so it keeps everyone happy.

Blue clothmat®©™ - Costs £1 from your local clothmat dealer, possibly a whopping €2 in the south (damn expensive shipping)

I ordered func from www.func.net , along with the anti-friction liquid..

I like the idea, we'll see how well it works in real life.. Supposed to reduce friction on the pad, and you can also apply it to the mouse feet.

The store is in the states, but they ship worldwide. Dollar is so weak at the moment that it's much cheaper.. Pad + liquid + shipping from the states equals just the pad price at www.overclockers.co.uk !

I got the XTrac Pro HS from www.dexsystems.net

    HS == Hard Surface.

Dex are a Spanish reseller for XTrac. The whole show was around 20 ooro. I bought it because of the rave reviews I read on the internet.

I must confess that I'd never considered the mousepad to be so important, but there you have it.

Oh, I haven't been able to use it yet because my optical mouse order got a bit mucked up (I'll pm you next week hopefully). If you google around though, you'll see some really good reviews.

Fast delivery option was around a fiver if memory serves.
