    Hi!

Bought a 1999 Mitsubishi Colt 6 months ago and have put up just over 10k on it.

Was just wondering how you know when the car is due a service??

Im only presuming that its done on milage - am I right?

a service is normally required ever 10k miles... the car manual should tell you this.

Be careful and also make note of when the timing belt needs to be changed too..

First one about 40k and then every 80k after that methinks but dont quote me on
it.. some of the other guys here may have more info..

as a general rule timing belts are AOK for 70K, 140K....etc

Problems generally arise when a car has been clocked, unknown to the new owner
and the said person will drive assuming that all is well, untill it goes pop!
then you're gonna bend your valves or snap the camshaft,
    both of which are terminal.

Rule in the trade is, better safe than sorry.
Change the belt if you're not 100%
The cost of getting a timing belt varies
Don't go to a main dealer, you'll be shafted, shop around for an estimate

And on the subject of oil changes, have a look or get someone to look at the condition of the oil on the dip-stick. If you rub the oil between your tumb and
little finger, it should keep a constant film on the fingers.
If it feels gritty or looses its film, I'd change the oil.
Get the garage thats doing the oil change to use fully synthetic oil
this with a fresh filter will happily do the car for @ 12K

p.s. its perfectly OK to blend fully synth and semi synth oil if your motor is a bit of an oil burner

    Happy Motoring

timing belt on a Colt should be done around 40 - 45k, also use Bardahl synthetic oil (can't remember exact type but a good motor factors/mechanic will know), it's about €25 for 5 litre bottle but it's worth it
