It's been a while since I've upgraded so I'm looking to invest in a new graphic's card. Should I go with the 9800 pro? Should I wait? Where's the best place to buy?

    Thanks in advance.

there aren't going to be any decent cards going for that kind of price for ages now (it'll be a while before even the 9800xt is affordable)
i'd go for a 9800pro now if i were you, making sure that its not one of the cheapo 128bit models...

i'll hopefully be buying a gfx card in a couple of months time. unless the 9800xt has dropped well below €300 by then, i'll still get a 9800pro

Those in the 3DGuru are ATI 9800 pro and not the Sapphire. Besides, if you check Komplett's website it still say 256MB. So if the card comes only 128MB, I'm sure you can return it as its not the same as advertised. Besides, I got the Sapphire and I dont have any problems with it at all. Plays Far Cry very smoothly with all settings maxed out.

    daveg,
if you're willing to wait a while I'll have this card available in a while secondhand. I'll be looking for about €140 for it, its 3 months old.Sapphire 9600XT 256mb

Your card is perfect. Have a look at the link provided again and look at the "128bit" in the heading............ i totally missed that 2 or 3 times. Your card is the 256bit version :) , komplett are only getting these in at the min.

is there anywhere selling the 256 version?have to cancel another order now...lol

These are pretty much new out, they will be selling for cheaper than usual 9800pro's.
I doubt anyone actually has one, it takes a while to filter through to europe.

Alot of people are getting R360 (XT) cores on there 9800pro's even the cheaper versions, so if you got a €200 card i wouldnt worry too much about it ......... you prob just got a good deal.

People who got the 9800pro ATI special from overclockers.co.uk mite want to check it..... that may or may not be a 128bit

Komplett's slightly more expensive 9800pro (sapphire) should be fine, also www.jes-computer.de have them for €209 - and have been selling them for the last good while.

[edit] Jes computers have lowered the price of the 9800pro's to €195.......... lovely :) .
Its definetly the 256bit cards ........... quote....

256-bit Speicher Interface überbrückt _____ translates to ____ 256-bit memory interface bridges

    So there the proper 9800pro

I got the 9800pro special from overclockers.

It has the R360 core for definite. It doesnt overclock reliably for me but I think thats cause I have a hot case. I doubt it has 128bit memory as it gives 3dmark03 score of around 5600 on a stock AMD setup.

Overclockers still have good prices on similar cards - don't know what their shipping is like to Ireland, but they do say on their website whether a card is 128 or 256 bit.

Afaik, the R360 doesnt overclocks well. They flashes to XT well though.

If your overclocking a 9800 pro or xt an Artic vga silencer is a must. It will drop the temp of the card by as much as 30c so you can get a very nice overclock out of them.

I've seen most people go well over 500 core with one and as5. The memory will max out at around 400 no matter what you do. The core will fly if you can keep it cool though.

I have a Sapphire 9800 Pro and an arctic silencer cooler on their way to me... is installation of the cooler difficult/awkward?

I think I'll wait a while before installing the cooler, as I want to make sure the card is alright before invalidating my warranty.

Its a piece of cake. Just follow the instructions and you'll be fine.

Getting off the old heatsink is the trickiest part. Its easy if you take your time and dont rush it if it wont come off easily at first

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,761 ✭✭✭Col_Loki

The whole thing is nice and easy. Its a good idea to try the card with the stock heatsink first. Also a long nosed pliers is very usefull for grabbing the fan power connector and also un-cliping the fan at the back............ easy i must say!!
    Thanks for that Col !!!

    No probs.
