Alright some may remember that i mentioned that im interested in breaking/entering the IT security sector

Was planning to do a masters in dcu, but just got a letter this morning stating basicly that ill need a 2.1 to get into the course and i have a very slim chance of getting that!

So basiclly thats that plan out the window. So what now i was basicly planning next year with this course in mind, will i just go off and try for a msaters elsewhere? There is a good mulitmedia course in UCC which id be interested in, but then again id prefer the security one, should I apply again next year or try and get work experience and doing a cert or two along the way

how good is the security+ cert and what other security certs are out there
I hears of Cissp (need 3+ years work experience so that a balls!)

Just pissed off really and need some advice on how to kickstart my carrer

Cissp: The hardest exam in the world???

Anyway, OK if you dont get the masters course, get some experence & a few certs.... A few companies hiring lately, EBay, Google, Intel, Siemens etc....

    Well good luck anyways.....

    Thanks JoePC

Theres also the www.sans.org GIAC certs which are pretty good. You can do them through the website aswell. They require you to do a written project in relation to the cert. GSEC is the starter one but then thers more specialised ones like firewall analyst etc.

Nothing beats experience though in the area. Perhaps a job moving into IT audit or the like will give you a decent start as you get a feel for dealing with management and report writing. There is a CISA exam that can be done. Easier than CISSP but to be CISA certified you need a few years in the job. (You can have passed the exam but because you dont have the work experience they wouldnt recognise you).

I havent heard any good things about the DCU masters-I was thinking about doing it at one stage aswell but changed my mind. Others may have different opinions. Maybe someone is actually doing it and can enlighten us.

I know nothing about the security+ certs alas.

There is never any harm in having certs though. www.bct.ie have courses and you can do homestudy too for things like the mcse/a and CCNA. No harm to know the areas.

Just to say Im in IT audit 3 years now. Im doing my CISA exam in 2 weeks time. My next goal is to get MCSA if I have the time but down the line it will be CISSP.

Cheers feel a bit better now, who knows i might get into it if not i might just do the other masters in UCC just for the sake of haivng that M.Sc in my CV plus i quite enjoy that multimedia stuff (my 2nd fav aspect of IT behind security of course:p ) so I dont think it would be a waste of time.

If I dont get it this year ill get in contact with the register and ask what can i do in the following 12 months to improve my chances. IF they tell me 2.1 is a must then feck that ill prob go for the other course. If they tell me work experience and a cert ot 2 then ill go for it again

I have a CCNA already and want to pick up another cert (security+ and maybe onther entry level cert) or two this summer but where im lacking is the work experience. There are feck all network admin jobs here in cork. Id take min wage if the work exp is good. Does technical support over the phone count towards work experience!?

On a side note how easy is the security+. Been looking at some of the guides and it doesnt seem that bad at all. Im after covering alot of the stuff already. Could i get away with a few weeks of craming and then just do it!
