Taxi Fares in Ireland

When I read the first post about Taxi Drivers looking for a price hike. I did not understand what all the fuss was about. However after reading some posts in here I can see some differences in Fares being charged by Taxi’s, which I am astounded by. It has compelled me to make a new post here just to find out exactly what Taxi fares are. So if people from around the Country could just post how much it would cost for a Taxi to go 3 Miles.

    In Athlone.
First 2 Miles (even with 4 passengers & loads of baggage) = €4.50c
Every Mile thereafter cost €1.50c extra.
There was no waiting time charged. (Nothing extra added no matter how long the journey took.) Add in an extra €1 after 9pm so a 3-mile journey before 9pm would cost €6.00c and after 9pm would cost €7.00c. No matter if there is 1 or 4 passengers or how long it takes. So what is the cost of a 3 Mile journey by Taxi in the rest of the Country?

A 3 mile journey in Dublin will cost a hell of a lot more at 5pm than at 2am, even the rate is lower. The reason for this is simply traffic. So the whole thread is a bit pointless and will lead to misrepresentation...

Those figures don't seem correct, where did you get them? There is nothing up on the Athlone Co. Co. Website, but the Westmeath Co. Co. site gives the following:
    http://www.westmeathcoco.ie/services/roads/licences.asp
Which does take into account time, and does have added charges for extra passangers. The fact that Athlone doesn't have charges would lead to the conclusion that they are part of the Westmeath metered area (in the same way as South Dublin Co. Co., Fingal Co. Co. and Rathdown Co. Co. are all part of the Dublin metered area, the costs of which are on the Dublin City Council website).

OHP's prices sound more like Hackney fares rather than Taxi fares. I'm a relatively new taxi driver working in the Tallaght area and I have been told horror stories by passengers regarding the fares charged. If you feel the fare is wrong demand a printed receipt and note taxi drivers badge number, report all of above to the carriage office Dublin Castle. The sooned the robbers are off the streets the sooner the decent guys will like it

Johnmb I actually got those prices from the Boss of a Taxi Company in Athlone. They are factual. And there are some Taxi companies in Athlone that charge less than those fares quoted.

Emm no paddyk. The prices I quoted are not hackney fares. And the point I am trying to make is. If you are in a Taxi, in whatever part of our Country. And you have to travel 3 miles to your home. You should expect to pay X amount for your Taxi... Period!!

Well, there's your problem. You're are not comparing like with like. If you want to do a proper comparison, then you should use the official, legal, rates, not hear-say.

Well, no, that wouldn't be right. Urban driving is more expensive than rural driving, so metered areas that are predominantly in urban areas should have higher rates than those in predominantly rural areas. That is common sense, and is what is standard in every country I have ever been to where I have gotten taxis in more than one part.

Johnmb, sorry for not getting back to you sooner. The link you gave me directed me to Taxi fares for Westmeath. And those prices are right. But Taxi fares for Athlone are, as I stated. These prices are not posted on the Westmeath Co Co Site but were sent out to each Taxi driver individually by post. I am finding it hard to get a copy of it. But trust me I will. :)

Well try as I might. But I cannot get an official Price List for Taxi fares for Athlone other than the one I have quoted. I really feel that Taxi Fares should be standardised through out Ireland and that anyone getting a Taxi in Ireland should be fully aware of their prices. And that Taxi's should be no older those 4 years old, no matter what make or model they are. Some of the fares I have seen here are huge and a lot of people have pointed out they are being ripped off by Taxi's. But not enough people have posted any comparisons to make any sort of complaint.

Phone the Garda Carriage Office - they set the prices everywhere.

FWIW, the fares are high, but they are the only thing I've seen stabilise or even go down slightly in the last 18 months.
The average cost of a taxi home for me after a night out has reduced by about €1-2. There was one point where I was seeing costs upwards of €20 to get home, but now they're stable at around €16-€17. Still a lot, but it's nice to have a price you can rely on in Rip-Off Ireland.
