"One in four of us will at some time suffer from cancer. The high mortality rate, the suffering experienced by patients from the side effects of existing treatments, and the high costs of treatment all contribute to making cancer a priority for drug research."

If youre short on cash and want to contribute you can do it by using this handy little piece of software. It has nothing to do with marketing/advertsing/big bad businesses and all it asks you is to volunteer your pc cpu time while youre not using it. It's not spyware and its perfectly safe.

For more info and to download the program go to http://members.ud.com/vypc/cancer/

The program can be run as a screensaver (when youre not using the computer) or whenever you want it to run and I think its the best thing since Bikini Babes used to be my screensaver.

Didn't C.E.T.I. do something like this a couple of years ago? It's called distributed processing or something.

Anyway, I'll give it a shot.

yes but while CETI is pointless this has a more useful and realistic objective.

good idea ... but unfortunately I can't ... firewall here at UL ... get the idea?

and anyway computers are always in use so it won't exactly run. I'll past it around at work though and give it to me mates.

and Kali ... this looks better too :-)

I've been researching this stuff. Basically its a good idea but United Devices joined up with Intel and other people. Its all extremely commerically based. Its better than not helping for sure - but once these guys figure out anything with the extremely powerfull free sources they obtaining from volunteers they'll try make everyone pay for it. If an academic approach to combating cancer arises using distributed computing - jump at it since all the information should be shared and not used for commerical use. Publically available information increases the speed of research much much faster than a closed business (for example the google search engine).

Btw my project was in creating an api for making these massively distributed parallel computers on the internet.

I took the liberty of creating a boards.ie team.
Anyone who is running the program just go to
    http://members.ud.com/services/teams/team.htm?id=7B148F5C-3FAD-4BD1-AD50-24D74B6EA65F
to join it... see how much we can add to it smile.gif

as far as the commercial end of it goes.. Intel only get to display benchmarks comparing your system to a 1.5Ghz P4...
    My 600E gets:
    Overall: 26
    Processor: 40
    Memory: 34
    Storage: 20
    and Network: 4 (go esat!)

Either way I think its a brilliant idea, and if anything comes off it however small, it will be worth it.

Anyway join the above team smile.gif
