Instant Messenger "Server"

    Here's the scenario:

several users, all connected via a router, so they can talk to one another. Mixture of Windows (primarily) and Linux. How does one user know who else is connected? Most important point is that there is no connection (yet) to the outside world, the PC's can only talk to each other (one step at a time).

I'm thinking of something along the lines of Yahoo/Microsoft messenger that starts up when user powers on PC, logs into some sort of "Messenger Server" and shows who else is logged in.

Anybody know if such a "Messenger Server" exists for Linux? Ideally one with a Windows client.

    Thanks,
    TD.

Jabber is yer man allright, and for a Jabber client I would recommend GAIM, its available for Linux & Windows and its free/open source. It also supports all the other major IM protocols (Yahoo!, MSN, ICQ...)
