Got mandrake installed a while ago.

Wanted to install some utilities and programs but i don't have a clue how to (got xmms installed some how? but it doesn't work).

What i was looking at installing was ut2k4 (only thing stopping me is that i don't know how to mount the disk?)
a msn messenger clone, a different internet browser cause konqueror is so slow.

I also have to get sound, does mandrake support nforce 2 onboard sound? have an asus a7n8x-e motherboard.

mdk10 automatically mounts cdrom drives, in fact, there should be cdrom icons on your desktop by default. If not, insert the cd, go to your command line and go to the /mnt/cdrom directory
READ the instructions on the cd for installing ut2k4

to install mozilla, IM clients etc ..go to your start menu -> system -> configuration -> packaging -> install software ...straightforward

i think urpmi is standard on mandrake 10 but i cant be so sure cause 8.* was the last one i used, that means you just log in as root, and urpmi xmms
or whatever, that ought to grab the rpm's, of course dependancies aren't so good with rpm, but simple stuff like that ought to be fine. as for unreal2004 , you need to get your gfx hardware support, The mandrake documentation is pretty comprehensive, you ought to be able to follow it fairly easily.

If urpmi isnt installed you ought to check out this site http://urpmi.org/easyurpmi/index.php

how come xmms dont work? thats wierd, what does it say when you run xmms in console?

you onboard sound ought to be ok : you should use alsa, id advise grabbing a 2.6 kernel , cause that comes standard with alsa. , you can find out your kernel version by typing kernelversion in console.
2.4 kernels use oss, which works fine, but is pretty old, the default plugin for xmms is the oss one,so sound ought to just works straight off, but for better general performance go for the 2.6 kernel.
Unfortunately there isnt very good mixing software in linux, so you like might not be able to play games and listen to mp3's at the same time. If you do want to grab a 2.6 kernel have a look at the mandrake documentation about it.

    . erm thats about it.

    Cheers for the replies.

I didn't get a chance to try any of it yet as i was waiting on a new hd so i could install mandrake and linux on seperate hd's.

The reason for the sound not working could be that i had a soundcard installed on setup and when i got my new case i never put it in and enabled the onboard sound instead.

Xmms just crashes when i try to play a mp3 no error message.

    Thanks,
    Jozi

when i try play a audio file in xmms i get a pop-up saying:
    Couldn't open audio

    Please check that:

your soundcard is configured properly, (dont know how to)
you have the correct output plugin selected (tried alsa and oss)
no other program is blocking the souncard (dont know how to check)

    i'm no the wiser anyway

(got mozilla and alsa installed by the way, how do i install file i have on hard disk)

What type of soundcard do you have? Make / model?

Go to System > Configuration > Configure Your Computer

Click Hardware. Click Hardware again. Scroll down to Soundard. What is listed under it, if anything? Mine says VT8233 [AC97 Audio Controller] - but yours will more than likely different. If there is an item there, click on it. What does the right hand side of the screen say?

What file? Is it an .rpm? a tar..gz? Give more information please.

The easiest way of installing software on Mandrake is going to System > Configuration > Configure Your Computer. Then click Software Management, then Install. This onlyinstalls software that came on your original install CDs / DVD, however.

Under soundcard it says: nForce APU and there's another one: nForce audio codec interface
nForce apu has a unknown module

    Don't know what it is

    What File?

For now my graphics card drivers, i have d/l the file from the nvidia site (got 2). one's a tar file and the other seems to be a txt file seems odd but it has coding in it so i guess i have to do some thing with it

    anyway thanks

    jozi

EDIT: i got sound to work, trough xmms anyway, and unreal tournament 2004 installed but i can't play? Get splash screen and that's it then, no drivers???

Mandrake 10 KDE uses 'soundwrapper xmms' to launch XMMS from the menu. Apparently there is a bug in the arts output plugin of XMMS supplied in Mandrake 10 which causes 'soundwrapper xmms' to crash on first sound output. A workaround is to edit the menu entry to remove soundwrapper and launch just 'xmms' (rightclick the Mandrake star/ Menu Editor and navigate to Multimedia/Sound/Xmms and change the command field to xmms). Alternatively you can look for the Cooker version discussed in this thread:
