For your ping to a server just type in the command prompt
    ping www.boards.ie

If you want to check your download speed just download a largish (over 1mb) file from an irish server.

    Chief.

    I use a program called i-speeder
it tells you what you current download speeds are in kb and KB, your average, how much you've downloaded since your computers been on and also the same for upload

Giganews has a very good bandwidth tester.
