Same problem as this guy ,thought it was temps but running steady at 48 cpu
and 40 case ,last night I reinstalled Win 98 and it seemed to run ok ,I ran
DVD shrink for an hour and then burned 2 DVD's without any problems ,I left
the comp on all night ,came home from work ,did a bit of browsing ,left it
for an hour ,and all of a sudden it shuts down , ,still has lights on the
case and keyboard, won't reboot till I disconnect the power supply and replace it ,scanned several times with ,AVG ,The Cleaner ,Spybot ,Adaware ,and PCpitstop online virus scanner , nothing !
I did have a virus last week but after the shutdowns the clock would revert
to sometime in the 1980's (no wise cracks) ,time and date would be a mile
off ,The BIOS had to be reset to default ,thats not happening now

I also installed all windows updates,

    PSU is a Q-TEC 400 w dual fan gold

I'm guessing a ram problem would cause reboots rather than a shutdown

Video card fan seemed to be runnig slow last week so I stripped it down added
a little light oil and it's flying now ,

That's all I can think of ,any sugestion would be welcome

    Cheers

Whats running on your system ?
Ctrl Alt Del and see what you have running, reduce them to the 2 you need ,buggered if i can remmebr names of the Explorer and one other is all win 98 needs.

I know Win98 doesnt like intensive programs.

    Have you tried XP ?

Could be a power supply problem , it appears the power supply is shutting down . Could be something tripping the power good line either. Trial and error to find the cause but i'd start by changing the power supply. Systray and explorer are the 2 files 98 needs but i think you have a hardware problem .

I BET YOU 1 MILLION DOLLERS IT'S THE CMOS BATTERY.
seriously, i've seen this before, 'twas weird i bought 3 psu's before i diagnosed it.

ALSO BET A LESSER AMOUNT ON IT BEING AN MSI BOARD.
they are known (by me) to have battery relatd cmos problems which disables normal boot.
