Sky Cable Problem ...

Hi - I had a problem with my Sky install last week ... Basically he couldn't pick up a signal from the house. The solution was to situate the dish about 150 metres from the house where there is a good signal.

The guy doing the install agreed to come back once i'd laid the cable to the required spot .... which i have done. BUT - the cable was slightly too short (5 metres or so) and my question is : Should i ditch the short cable and relay a new continuous cable? Or is it feasible to join additional cabling to what is there now? The "join" would have to be outside the house so i am worried about exposure to the elements and also loss of signal given that the dish is already some distance away.

Any advice would be appreciated !

Should be OK to join the cable using an F-type coupler and making sure the joint is fully sealed with amalagamating tape.

Ideally it ought to be a continious cable.

Thanks for that - I'll give it a go ..... don't fancy relaying that cable

    Hi Lads

I was under the impression that as digital sat. cable should not be over 30 m in length ans should be continious run.

Yes but you can get amplifers that go between the LNB and Reciever, and an engineer would surley have considered that fact before recommending a cable run of this length.

Can you get a roll that long ? 100m Standard??

I agree a continious run is better but a well constructed F Barrel joint would hardly loose that much, or would it?

Edit: I seem to have asked more questions than I actually answered. For future reference Mick,Stay quiet unless you know the answer!!!

Just to let you know - I decided to relay the cable in the end ...... as its such a long run, i didn't want to risk any signal loss.

The Sky installer didn't seem to think there will be a problem, and the house next door has a similiar set-up.

Oh, and you can get 200m runs of the cable .....
