I intend to change my surname for family reasons, need some basic infio:

    - How exactly do you do it - you can do yourself or thru solicitor ?

    - How long does the process take?

    - How much does it cost ?

    - Anything else in particular I need to be aware of?

    thanks

    :)

it should cost roughly €200 afaik. (can't open the link above)
just go into a solicitors office and explain your situation.

planning on doing it myself when i have the cash to spare:)

With regard to chaging your name by Deed Poll, please be aware that your Birth Certificate cannot be changed, your original name and only your original name will remain on that forever, you simply receive an extra piece of legal paper confirming that you changed your name by Deed Poll as and from such a date. So every time your Birth Certificate is required for something, you will need to present both documents, so everyone will still know your original name and your new name. This messy situation completly put me off the whole idea a number of years back when I looked into it. Basically, you can't escape from your original name completely.

You can use a new name just like that, you don't need anything official - this is what happens when people change their name on marriage.

It is straight forward enough to do a deed poll through a solictor, but you will need it recorded by a court clerk for passport purposes, etc.

I'd been thinking of giving myself a middle name, but at €200 I think not.

If it's not too personal a question (that is, if the reason isn't too personal and you don't mind mentioning it), can I ask why a couple of people are considering changing their names?

I would have always presumed that people would do it to be dissociated with their families, but I realise that that's a blinkered view on the whole situation. Perhaps someone's just unhappy with the sound of their name...

Anyhoo, would like to know if anyone doesn't mind talking about it...

    Cheers for the info peeps.
200 yo yo's aint that bad I suppose

I have been meaning to do this for years and my Passport is up this year so this has bought up the name change thing in my head agian - change the name, get new passport with the new name and then I'm hopeing i wont be to 'Tied' to my old name when it comes to proveing ID in future

'why a couple of people are considering changing their names?'

well, you hit the nail on the head about the family thing tbh.
I have had an idea to do this for a long time but now feels right. I think Ive matured a fair bit and had time to reflect on things from the past and this is like a new chapter for me. Im 29.

heck,If something dramatic happens in the future re: family then I can change back (i doubt it)
By family I mean my father specifically, my mum seperated when I was very young and was divorced not long after and for me it feels like I am carrying around history with this name. I have zero contact with my father and his side of the family , I did try to build bridges a few years back but it went tits up. I would recommend anyone to try if in my position , you may be luckier than me!
Basically my father has only ever givin me 1 sperm and did his damndest for years to make life as hard for my mother , me and my bro. He succeded.
All ancient history now and I have no 'baggage' beyong the name ( I hope)

Another factor is me growing up a bit and thinking about if/when I have kids I want them to have my mothers surname basically as a she bloody well earnt the honor after raising us through years of hardship.
My father forfited the right to have my potential childern bear his name.
If he came banging on the door to make up and was sinsere I would reconsider but I really cannot see this happening.

    There!! well you asked deathfunk

Really it's very easy to do it yourself. And you save €170.

There is a Deed Poll office in the Four Courts. If you live in Dublin then you are definitely better off doing it this way.

My friend changed his name to Ming, so that he could use the name to run in the General Election back in 1997, it cost just £25 at the time I believe... and the only problem was the having to deal with the surly old registrar.

But they just aren't that used to people changing their names to silly things and look down on it.

But they get people in your situation all the time...

Actually it's mostly women who have sperated from their spouces and want to revert to their Maiden name.

    not at all.
my father was fostered as an infant and as such, got lumbered with a fairly nasty surname.
i wouldn't want my children/future spouse (if any) to be lumbered with a surname that i don't like, and isn't even in my bloodline.
    personally, i'd rather distance myself from my father's (biological) side of the family, and change my surname to either of my mother's parent's surnames;
    Kidd or Payne.

/edit quoted the wrong part of your post, deathfunk... you get the idea though

Not sure about that. "Bertie Ahern" is something like "Bartholemew Ahearne" on his birth cert.

They don't actually need to do anything formal, as invariably they have done nothing formal to change their name in the first place.

Your legal name shows up on the Ballot paper.. not the birth cert name.

My friend wanted to change his name to Ming the Merciless, but they wouldn't allow him to change his name to a description. So he changed his name to Anthony Ming (Anthony being his middle name). This meant that he appeared at the top of the ballot sheet as A, Ming.

And of course there is Sean Dublin Bay Rockall Loftus, he changed his name for politics too.

I think in Britain they aren't as picky over what you can change your name to, as I remember a person who was having trouble with their bank changed their name to Natwest Are a Shower of ****, and the bank had to address all corespondence to him like that.

You would have to be Irish resident - but I'm not sure for how long you would need to be resident. Of course, changing the name on the passport of another country might be a bit more complicated.

    ok.

didnt read any of the other replies, so apologies in advance if this is repeating anything.

you dont actually have to do anything legal to change your name. you can just change it. if you spend over 2 years using a name which everyone knows you by then it becomes an official name.
Im not sure how you can go about getting bills and documents in your new name, but i have changed my name in the past this way. of course, i was about 12 when i did. by i have two passports with different names on them, and both are valid.

i have also become an irish citizen through naturalization with my newer name, even though my birth cert has a different name on it.

i guess one way may be to start using a different name in work and get them to pay mr smith on the pay check. use that to start getting utility bills. once you have those youa re sorted. you can use utility bills for most things these days.
    anyway, hope it helps.
