Are internships generally paid or are they more like work experience in that they are more voluntary??

I imagine its up to the company, but generally?

The ad i saw doesnt specify, and I wasnt going to ask something about money before I'd even gotten an interview.

    thanks,

    Flogen

You should normally get something a little bit above minimum wage.

Some pay, some dont.. its up to the company in question..

Some companies use it as a sort of slave labour and basically treat those who take
these internships as pieces of dirt and give them the worst jobs that their fulltime
    employees wouldnt do...

Others however, use it as a way of spotting talent early and most tend to then offer
that person a fultime position when college is finished..

I know people who have been in both situations..

The best way to work around it, is to apply for the position, go for the interview and
work it that way.. usually in the case of an interview the monetary package is
mentioned and it saves you the hassle.. If its not, then ask them at the end of the
interview when they ask you do you have any questions..

I'm on a work placement/internship with a large Irish company at the moment, they treat me pretty well. I was afraid of getting a load of donkey work/tea making duties dumped on me but that hasn't come to pass. yet. :)

i've done two internships in IT support and they both paid... one paid the temp rate of the company which was 5.25 pounds an hour at the time, and the other was 15,600 euro a year (think it worked out 1150 a month after tax)... both of them apologised for the money because it was capped by the University (to stop you getting a taste for cash and dropping out of college)

it tends to be internships in the states that would expect you to work for free more so than here afaik

I got paid 18,000 a year for my internship. There was a condition that the company weren't allowed keep us on after the 12 months, so we had to return to college.

Mine was organized through my college as part of my course, so it wasn't too hard for me to get one.

I've seen plenty of US companies advertise for internships and they dont pay.

Think it just depends on the company
