Buying new HDD for laptop

    Hi Folks,

I have an old (1999) Fujitsu laptop with a 6GB hard disk. I need to upgrade this, and I'm looking at 40GB drives. My question is - are all 2.5" 9mm drives the same (same connectors etc.), or are there likely to be hardware compatibility issues ?

They have the same connectors but newer drives are slightly smaller in height.

they're all pretty standard, but you might want to check that the bios on your laptop will accpet a 40gb drive first (m/f website should tell you) but apart from that they are all (or have been in my experience) the same compatabilty wise.

had a batch of 20gb drives for work tho that all had the drive jumpers set to slave by default.

nobody noticed this until we had 3 'dead' drives in a row. seemed stupid that they would do this considering they were laptop drives, after all who has 2 laptop hd's in one machine?

I'm considering the same with my Dell CPi A Series .

New HDD worked a treat. I just had to remove the jumper that came installed by default. Cheers for the advice.

Lots of laptops will require HD's to be mounted in caddies, or to have some kind of adaptor fitted (usually the one on the disk that comes with the laptop can be re-used)
