Guitar Restoration

I managed to get my hands on a gibson sg real cheap, only prob is that theres a little restoration work needed to be done. Firstly does anyone know if you can buy the dot markers (the little pearl ones) that sit in the side of the fretboard as a few are missing, and secondly does anyone know if you can buy a gibson headstock logo anywhere (theres fire damage to the headstock, the wood is fine but the paint is damaged and so is part of the gibson logo). I'd prefer not to have to use e-bay to do this so if anyone knows an online shop that would be great!

No online shop can actually sell Gibson logos because they are copyrighted. Try www.stewmac.com for your inlays however.

Are the Gibson logos not inlaid abalone?

Depends on the guitar tbh. I worked on a LP Special that was just a black overlay. Horrible horrible guitar.

A friend of mine bought a LP standard a coupla weeks ago, it certainly wasn't just a decal stuck onto the headstock.

    Sweet f*cking guitar too.

Yeah, the standards are decent instruments. The Specials are not. I despise the neck on them. Really really bad and the pickups are a bit dodge. But that's off topic tbh.

'Despise' is a strong statement ;)

    Check this out

    www.theguitarworkshop.net

I've heard a lot about this guy - apparently he's a real pro and he does restoration work as well. Some of the pics on that site are impressive.

Despise as in I can't play the thing it's that uncomfortable. I just don't like the flat D shape :(

The black LP on eugenes site is mine, as you can see he scraped off the paint and stuff from the front of the headstock. Looks perfect to me anyway, the neck is also very strong, even though it was repaired.

Yeah I know eugene and he's done a fair whack of work for me in the past, the problem is that the logo on this SG is the gold one which isnt inlaid, just a decal, and the actual logo has suffered fire damage so the logo would need to be replaced :(

There was an article in guitarist or guitar buyer magazine recently about a guy in england who does guitar customisations including putting l.e.d.'s in the inlays. I'll check the name of it this evening, looks pretty sweet.

    I think you're thinking of www.simscustom.com Zoton

Yup, thats the one. Pricey, but oh so funky!

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

I've been looking into doing it for a long time. If I get some money and a 7 string over the summer, I might just do it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 697 ✭✭✭Zoton

 Meep! Its about €500 for 12 led's. You'd certainly be the object of many young ladies affections with those;)

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

    £500 for 12 leds??

Anyone else smell bull****. AFAIK, it shouldn't cost €100. Hopefully I'll know in a month or two :)

I was checkin the cost on the link you put up, and thats what it said dude.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Yeah, I know. I'm saying that he's talking bull**** and getting a massive profit from each install I'd say.

Well it is a business after all. (i think there's a 40% discount if you just send the neck)
But yeah that's pretty expensive. Let us know how you get on or if you can get it done for around €100!

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Will do. I'll need around €300 to get the guitar and supplies so we'll see what I can get this summer :(

Probably be selling a bass and hard case soon if you're interested....

I don't play bass myself, saving my hard earned cash for either a second hand prs or an esp ltd k-500:D

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Hmm, maybe I'll try to flog it to Doc J so he can smash it or something.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 697 ✭✭✭Zoton

The man does love his basses, but i didn't think he'd bring himself to smash one:eek:

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

True. Wouldn't be up to his level of guitar though. Ah, we'll see. I'll let ya know if I ever get round to putting nice blue LED's in my guitar neck.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 697 ✭✭✭Zoton

Hmmm....blue, I'd have to go with red myself.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

No, that wouldn't look right with the body finish ;) Won't say any more than that yet...

Bad basses deserve to be smashed. Let it be written, let it be done ;)

Well, you can smash my bass and case for €100.

Then give me it back so I can fix it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 697 ✭✭✭Zoton

I couldn't bring myself to smash any guitar or bass. I really hate seeing guitars being smashed in music videos. :(

Well I've got a Squier P bass I'm gonna smash for free, unless I sell it first, so there ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 697 ✭✭✭Zoton

 Well rather than smash it, could you not give it away to some school or music class or something?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

    Of course not.

    I'll sell it first. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 697 ✭✭✭Zoton

Well if you cant sell it, then why not give it away?

    I'd rather smash it.

... or maybe burn it and take pictures in the name of art.

Charity went out with Jesus, man ;)

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

    whos selling a bass now?

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

I might be selling my bass very soon for €100 or so. There's a bit of cosmetic damage that I'll sort out before I put it up for sale. You interested? It's collection from Dundalk only I'm afraid.
