The best way of adding a search engine to your site depends on what results you want to give.

You can purchase commercial or obtain free search engines to incorporate into your site. This may be the best option for you. But they may be very difficult to customise to your site.

You should think about what information you want the search facility to return to the site visitor. This will determine what search tool to use. It may be best to write your own (or have one written for you).

That said, if you just want to have any search facility on your page, I hear good things about Atomz.

Justhalf seems to be answering another question, but to answer yours, each search engine has its own system of adding webpages. For google this can be done quite simply at http://www.google.com/addurl.html .

If you want a quick, dirty and cheap way of allowing people to search through your site.... you can always use google....

    Example:
    http://www.google.com/search?q=porn+site%3Awww.boards.ie&submit=Google+Search

you just need to add "site:www.mysite.com" to the end of a search, so just rig up a form todo this :)

For spidering search engines make sure that the HTML is clean and that you have a full set of meta tags. (There's a simple tool on our site at: http://www.blacknight.ie/meta/ )
For directories try to provide a clear an objective description of the site. If you are submitting sites manually avoid using terms like "best", "biggest" or "cheapest" - editors hate that.

There are a lot of online tools to help speed the process up, but most of them suck. Over the course of the last few years I've tried a lot of them to see, but I always end up coming back to the same one:
