Well the mighty Real Madrid don't look so mighty anymore.
A 2-1 loss tonight to Murcia (who are bottom of the table and already relegated) has seen them drop to third in the league. Barcelona beat Racing, so they're second w00t.

But, this defeat is their 5th consecutive one in the league now (I think). For a team that was expected to conquer all they have ended up with nothing. If they lose their final game and Deportivo win they'll end up in 4th!

Dumped out of the Champions League by Monaco. Beaten in the Spanish Cup final by Zaragoza. Lost the league to Valencia and now to make matters worse they're behind Barcelona, which is really rubbing salt into the wounds.

Carlos Queiroz is gonna find it hard now to keep his job. Big signing David Beckham has not improved the squad all that greatly and their poor defence has been their downfall. Will Perez finally realise he needs to buy good defenders if he wants Real Madrid to really be the ultimate team? With the team getting old they're going to need to invest in some young talent too.

So, it goes to show throwing money around wont guarantee you success.
Hopefully Barcelona will beat Zaragoza next week and automatically qualify for the CL.

Eamon dunphy was right when he said that football is run by idiots. I dont blame carlos quieroz for real`s bad season. Its the fault of egocentric team presidents like perez. Perez sticks his nose in team affairs far too often. he insists on david beckham playing in the middle of the park. He refuses to invest money in defence. he also does not seem to think that a holding midfield player is required. And now instead of trying to bolster the squad in problematic areas he wants to buy more attacking talent. Totti and henry are on the clubs wanted list.

having spent the last few seasons with the kevin keegan mentality of it doesnt matter how many we concede as long as we score one more than them its finally catching up with them and they are conceding far to many goals, Ah well its all helped towards the resurgence (sp?) of barcelona, gwan the barca!!

How many CL spots are up for grabs? do they have the same allocation as england? ie 2 automatic and 2 qualifiers

I dont think its fair to say Beckham hasnt improved the squad, I think he would improve any squad...But the fact that they let Makele & Moirentes go, when they definitly needed Makaele and could have used Moirentes when Ronaldo was injured. I agree that they need to buy a defender, just wonder which defender has the best marketing value ;)

Great to see Barcelona back up there, they've been playing great entertaining football and deserve it.

Beckham is not that good a player and he has played very averagely since joining them bar the first month or so. How he could be considered one of the top players is beyond me. he is best passer of the ball but thats it. nothing special. they need defenders and a holding midfielder if they are to be te best tem. Itjust goes to show even having all of the best forwards in the world dont mean your going to win anything. A good defnce is the most important thing

Yeah they will have to Qualify.

They were pathetic last night. Their 4th defeat in a row, the first time in the club's history! They miss Ronaldo big time and it didn't really help them when Beckham got sent off.

Surely if he is the best passser of the ball, he must be considered one of the top players? Unless the idea of route one football is back in fashion and will win a team the league and champions league. And to be honest if a team was using route one football who better to play the long ball up? I dont think they have preformed well as a team and I think Beckham is coming into some critism over here because he is the easy solution, Zidane has had a horrible last month or two months, doesnt look half the player he is. They do miss Ronaldo, Thoguht Portillo would have filled in better however...

To be fair, he's hardly going to move Figo (who is twice the player of Beckham) into the middle, Figo is more suited to the right wing. Also, from August to Christmas Beckham was playing the best football of his career in the middle of midfield.

I am very good with a dead ball but I am hopeless with a football in general. Ian Harte (on his day) is/was one of the best passers in the premiership but was/is still woefull at football in general. Beckham is a very good player but he doesn't deserve to go down as an all time great, but he will probably go down as one of the top 10 in the world.

Real have been very poor over the last few months.
Raul has scored very few goals since the turn of the season .
Ronaldo has been out injured and when he has played he has only looked half interested.
Casillas has made alot of clangers in goal .
Beckham and Guti in midfield are a soft touch and have been roughed out of it by tougher midfielders and Real have been starved of possession in most of their away games.
Zidane isnt playing well either and seems to be doing alot of cynical fouling.
He is quite a dirty player .
Everyone blames the centre backs but the fact of the matter is any centre backs would struggle in that team as the midfielders very rarely track back resulting in the centre backs being continuously outnumbered.

Figo can operate on the left hand side of midfield. He would complement roberto carlos well. They should establish a central midfield partnership of Cambiasso and Zidane and move beckham to his natural position of right midfield there he can get could crosses in to ronaldo and raul. lets face it hes not able to function in the middle of the park. he is unable to close down talented opposition midfielders like Aimar and Ronaldinhio. He will be more able to impose his style if he is played on the wing. hes not a great player hes worth more as a brand than as a footballer Lampard, Scholes and Gerrard are arguably just as good if not better but he still has a lot going for him.
