    hello,

after losing a god almighty amount of data (150gb+) due to a faulty hdd im building a raid 0+1 array in my machine using new found cheap 120gb sata drives in pc world (89 euro- see thread in bargin forum) bu tmy queation is this!

i know i need 4 drives to start 0+1, but in future say i get another 2 disks to add to the arrray, so 6 disks in total, when i add in the new drives will the array automatacally (sp?) restripe to use the new space or will i have to reinstall an os and data again!

    thanks for any info!
    tom

As far as I know you'd have to reinstall the whole stripe again. You'd be better with 2x80 in Raid a 1x160 as backup drive not in RAID. That way you can rebuild the RAID when ever you like. I think you have to move to some thing like RAID 4 or 5 before you can just add disks on the fly. But I don't know too much about it to be honest.

Install a hardware Raid controller with Raid 5 support
