left a PC here to go eat something and when I got back come a black screen with an ominous sentence in white text was waiting for me...

No boot devices were found-System Halted

had to power cycle to get the machine up again and it boots fine... is the HD about to give up?

It sounds ominous alright, It could just be a quirk, but start backing up the important stuff now. Don't put it off, or it might end up being too late.

AFter thats done, run a few diagnostics on the HD and see what happens, but back up before you do anything else!

If it is dying, running diagnostics might be enough to push it over the brink.
