Fixing My Creative Zen?

I managed to drop the thing while it was on awhile back. It refuses to start since, so I presume the HD is knackered. Now I don't want to shell out for a new one so I'm wondering what my options are. Can I send it to Creative and get them to fix it? It'd require a 20 gig HD. I haven't rang them but I'm worried they'd try and fleece me. Anyone know what they charge?

Another option could be getting a HD myself, whipping the Zen open and sticking in a new HD. I've removed the back with a lot of hassle and from the guides I've browsed, there shouldn't be a problem with putting in a new HD. HD's however and the time to fix it are money so maybe I'd be better off just letting Creative do the work for me?

    Any thoughts/ideas/suggestions would be grand.

    Don't do anything!

E-mail creative and tell them that it just stopped working (which technically is true). Give them proof of purchase, and tell them you'd like to send it away to get it fixed. They will more than likely replace it free of charge.

I broke it though! Walking into college on a cold frosty morning, my stiff little hand pulled it out to change a song, it fell, spinning out of my hand. In vain I tried to reach for the earphone lead, but it was too late . . .

It's my fault, I'll sort it myself.

They would see you dropped it and opened it pretty quickly. Swapping the HDD yourself is probably cheaper than paying Creative to do an out of warranty repair. Consider this an opportunity to upgrade the harddrive.

Ill buy the broken hdd off you for EUR10 if you are interested?

Be 100% sure though that an off-the shelf HDD will go into it. The software may be installed on the disk, which is why it won't start. I would have thought that if the software was firmware, the player should start, but it will give an error or somesuch.

If it is, it may be possible to ask Creative for a copy of the software and install it from your home machine.

The player starts, I get the 'rescue' screen. If I try to reload the OS it gives a hard disk error. If I try to format the drive I here some whirring noises and then it hangs. I've got a feeling that the disk arm might have been knocked out of postion when it took a tumble.

Providing you stick to certain Fujitsu drives (according to the lots of people who've upgraded/fixed their Zens) then you should have no problem with a new HD.

Another possibility, check with your insurance company. Accidental damage like that may be covered under your home insurance policy. Give them a ring, worst can happen is they say no.

All right i have a zen 40 GB player and my bro broke it onn me, he was up at a house and i think they might have stepped on the back of it pushing the blet clip thing on the case into the harddrive and f**kin it!!

sendin it back to creative, cost €150 to get a new hard drive, and i think €20 euro to get it deliveried (by DHL)
your insurance should cover it, i looked into it and anything under €500 euro in house content they'll replace although i dont need to my bro broke it he can pay for it
