  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,951 ✭✭✭L5

Nope, its the same size when unfolded as the SP, its a bit wider though not a whole lot

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,080 ✭✭✭✭Tusky

WOW WOW WOW. That blew me away , the touch is screen is not a gimic , theres no question about that. So many things that can be done with it , Really like the instant messager thing , and controlling metriod with the tuoch screen looks great, graphics look brilliant...

I imagine a web browser could be created for the ds, seeing as it has wi-fi capability. Ill be importing this thing in December for sure, provided it doesnt sell out first!

i highly recommend that video, i dont usually download big files (even though i have broadband), definatley watch it, thanks for uploading it btw.

It looks amazing, a must have the wireless capability is amazing, i know psp has it but is it possible to play over the net or just LAN ?

i hope they dont get side tracked into making games for kids, since the possibilities for touch screen - more likley kid games.
The pac man game looked totally amazing ! so did the fps and sonic.

as for the thing itself, it looks a bit big.

    psp or ds ?
    must get 1!

Its not much taller or wider than the Gameboy advance

The ds really seems the far better handheld :)

true, but psp looks slick but its all going to end up as

nintendo = is it gonna get titles ? or just its own mario sequence loop.
Gonna have to go with the one with better games.

Didnt nintendo say that they have a lot of 3th party development teams such as EA squaresoft and sega backing them.........I douth there will be a lack of games for the Ds.

    PSP looks like hell tbh

    really impressed by this, really.

I dont usually go for handhelds, but this thing pushes it out of the usual just games thing, and makes it into an amazing device with so much possibility, and the graphics look amazing too. The one thing I wasnt sure about in the whole video was the firing/turning in metroid, it seems that when you want to turn you have to shoot your gun too!! But thats minor, and otherwise, the thing looks amazing. The carving tech demo was cool as well, and i'd love to get the air hockey!

When the psp was announced, i thought that nintendo were doomed, as far as i was concerned, they had spent too long alone in the handheld market and would be too relaxed to be original, this just shows how wrong I was, and unless something amazing happens, sony wont have a patch on them. I hope that this is a sign of things to come, and we can expect an equally original console too, something to really set them apart.

I wonder if you could use that as a kind of PDA thingey, Im sure the software will be available... anyway, if you can or not... its on my wish list

The initial shots of him turning (in the multiplayer version) he could turn w/o shooting. I think the way it works is if the pen is close to the screen, you can turn, and then to fire you actually touch the screen.

Does anyone else think it looks a tad awkward for a handheld console to have to have one hand free to use the pen? then buttons on the right wouldn't be utilised. and what about those whose are left-handed, forced to draw with their right because of where the d-pad is.

This is the 10th competitor nintendo has had in the handhelp market. So far its Nintendo 9, competitors 0. When the gamegear came out it was full colour and way more advanced than the gameboy, but how did it do? It flopped. Its not about which is the more powerful. Sony seem to be intent on releasing the same kind of games exactly from ps2 to psp. How many people are going to want to own 2 copies of the same type of game.?

They've never had competition in the handheld market from Sony before....what about all the PS sheep? The PSP looks more like a "business" toy than a gaming one, so this could add more sheep to the flock - and don't forget the obligitory "Nintendo = kiddies" comment that all the "cool" 12 year olds make.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,070 ✭✭✭Placebo

L5 you can pre order it from gamespot.com with free dilvery for around 200$, relase date around November, but if the date is changed you wont get your money back, you`ll have to wait and IF the price drops to lets say 150$, you dont get your 50$ back..

    as for psp vs ds.
ds looks a bit chunky and i seen the add for psp and it had some 2d fighting game, seen morgan in it, looked like M vs C, if so, il have to get psp.
But dont y`all forget, Zelda, 3d, handheld.
    heaven ?

I doubt the guy has seen it.

When the DS was first announced and details were sketchy, my first thought was 'an extra screen just for a map??!! stupid!'

Seeing the video just shows that that is the most basic application for the screen, and in reality it can do a hell of a lot more.

If the PSP is simply a smaller PS2, then playstation can forget it, I dont want the same crap, I want something new, a new level of interaction and a new level of inventivness.
Microsoft and Sony, take note... everyone knows (sadly) that the ps3 and xbox2 are going to be the same thing, but with better graphics and power.. I wonder if the GC follow up will be something new...

Hmmm it says that you will get the refund if the price drops.

"Price and release dates are subject to change. If the actual release price is lower than what we have listed, you will only be charged the lower price"

have you seen the size of the psp it's the size of a encylcopedia (sp)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,333 ✭✭✭Celt

I seen the vid, and yes, it has potential.

But how many developers are going to put the time and money into truly utilising the second screen?

The PSP is large, but its not that big e3.jpg

The fact the PSP is more powerful does matter, it's not a huge deal, but it is a good thing.

sorry, i read it wrong then.

would it be possible to connect the DS to a wireless router and play online ?
and the second screen is also used for texting while in game.
I might go for DS if it gets a street fighter title. but psp plays videos too !

Do you have to use the pen on the touch screen? can you not just hit the virtual buttons with your thumb?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,070 ✭✭✭Placebo

i think you can, you can either use the stulus or your thumb But i read somewhere that the screen was 3 inches ? looks bigger, besides you wont be able to see anything using your thumb, plus when txting aswell the buttons will be small, carrying that stylus will be a pain.

yeah it will have a slot when its released they said. the design is not final either, therell be some slight changes apparantly before its released. with a new name also, it wont be called DS, even though i quite like that name now :D

Dev teams love new forms of interaction for their games once they've been proven to work. If there are a few very successful games that use the touch screen in a meaningful way then I can see huge interest in it. At the same time I've tried playing CS with a mouse touch pad and felt like ripping my eyes out so remains to be seen which way this will go.

I'm not sure which of these devices I'll buy, I could end up going for both of them if they're both established in two years from now with very different sets of games. Also I've major concerns about the screen on the psp. My GBA cover is covered in marks and scuffs just from living in my pocket with my car keys. I can't imagine what would happen to that big wide unprotected screen. And I wouldn't really be that interested if I can't stick it in my pocket.

Dev teams may, but very few publishers do.

EA, atari, even to an extent ubisoft dont seem to :/

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,722 ✭✭✭Thorbar

If a publisher sees it as a gimick that its marketing department can use as a selling point then they'll be interested in it. Also a touch screen isn't really a new concept, shouldn't cost developers all that more to use then say a mouse or dpad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,709 ✭✭✭Balfa

celt: over 100 3rd parties are interested, including EA, Atari and Ubisoft

Placebo: even the GBA can play video. That's nothing interesting.

Read what we were talking about, everyone knows EA et al will just use it as a glorified map.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 999 ✭✭✭DrunkLeprachaun

Who cares if some developers/publishers use it as a glorified map, as long as the do it well. Even if they don't, it's not the end of the world. The touch screen alone won't make good games, and as long as some games make good use of it(and I know many will, especially nintendo themselves), it's not gimicky. You're really just coming off as a ps kiddy, Celt. I was sceptical of the idea the first time I heard it too, but when I saw what they were doing with it, it was more than serendipitous, and I know look forward to getting one a lot. From what I've seen of it, the graphics on it are great, so who really gives a rats ass about it's specs. It's not graphics that make good games anyway. And as for the PSP having a bigger screen, it probably wouldn't if you add the two DS screens together.
The DS is an original idea, and in my opinion a very good one. The PSP is just going to end up as a slightly smaller clone of the PS2 with probably all the same games. Don't get me wrong, if it turns out good I may well buy one, but the DS just looks a lot more promising. Nintendo have dominated the handheld market for two decades, they're not about to reliquish their grip all that easily.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,333 ✭✭✭Celt

    <insert nintendo fanboy flame>

I only use my PS2 to play ps1 games on, and even that's rare.
I'm a pc gamer and occasionally use the GBA.
