    Hi all,

I am hoping some one out ther might be able to get me out of a little problem!

I have recently bought a house in balbriggan and wanted to get my TV channels sorted. Ideally I want to get the basic channels + Sky 1 and E4.

I contacted NTL but they wont install because its a 3 story house with no chimney!!

I contacted Chorus but they dont supply to Balbriggan

I contaced Sky but they need the land line and I dont have €130 for installation nor the €25 per month for line rental!

Am I doomed to only receive the snowy reception I am currently getting from my Rabbit Ears!

I would really appreciate any help!!

    No you are not doomed.
Buy a second hand digibox from ebay and then ask Sky for a second hand contract and then you don't have to worry about a phoneline rental.
You will have the upfront cost of a second hand dish ,digibox and instalion cost ( ie the installer )
Ask at Irelands satellite dot ie, they are fairly reasonable.

Thread moved to satelite for want of a better home.

(You can also receive most uk channels and the Irish ones afaik with a decent amp and aerial in the balbriggan area-should you wish to go down that route)

Sky can't make you get a land line - it's a gimmick so that they can charge you for teletext & skyactv.. contact their customer service dept again or better still if there is a rep locally - talk to him .... You REALLY dont have to have a land line -

this is misinformation, to takle advantage of the free digibox offer you MUST have a landline connected, otherwise the retailer will not get paid for the box.

As suggested the second hand route is the way to go, or if you just want BBC and some news channels with no monthly fee just get a free to air set up.

    Good luck

If you look around you will find that a few selected retailers around the country CAN install Sky for you without the need for a landlind .

Try asking Tony O Toole , Electroplus , Dublin

Please let us know if you have any success as I know there are lots of people without landlines who would love to get sky. Maybe we could put it on the retailers "sticky " list if you have any joy.

Of course there are retailers who will sell you Sky without a landline, but be prepared to pay well in excess of €300 for the box and dish, then add on the cost of installation on top, then set up your subscription and pay the same price for it as all those who availed of the free installation and equipement all for the sake of a phoneline connection for the first year.

    Yes that makes perfect sense:rolleyes:

Unless of course you cannot/dont want to get the line installed which is a totally different matter, then the secondhand option is a bit more realistic.

BTW are you talking about the free digibox offer? Mickeyboymels post prompted me to ask this.

    YOU DONT NEED A LANDLINE!!!!!

i got sky digital installed last august for 15 euros included(box.dish, coaxial cable, telephone cable, labour) directly from sky you have to subscribe to the 60 euros package for a month then you can change i am currently on the family package 27 odd euros they did connect the telephone wire to the box but i took it out better ring sky directly for installation much easier i think they use sierra on the east coast as a contractor

But you DO have a landline, you just disconnected the cable afterwards.

Why don't you bring your satelite dish (just get it installed again) and the skybox with you into your new 3 storey house?

What is wrong with you guys . I repeat for the hard of hearing ,

THERE ARE A SELECT NUMBER OF RETAILERS OFFERING SKY ( FREE BOX AND STANDARD INSTALLATION ) WITHOUT THE NEED TO CONNECT TO A LANDLINE .

COST OF SAME €95.00 ( STANDARD INST ) THIS IS A TRIAL BEING CARRIED OUT BY SKY AND IS 100 % APPROVED .

I will try to get hold of a list of participating retailers , but I'm sure if you ring the main dealers around the country , you will find out soon enough .

Why not buy a Sky box on eBay and specifically ask Sky for a second-hand contract? Certainly Sky in the UK offer these - and you don't need to be connected to a phone line.

Satman did you get this information at the Toys for Big Boys show, or maybe it was the guy who told when UTV was coming to sky.

    Source Please:D

No ! I'm not going to quote sources .

As I have already said , why don't you contact your local Sky agent to see if he/she/they are participating in this trial . There are only 26 counties in Ireland , I don't think you should have to make too many calls.

In any case this trial is happening as we speak . I'm surprised that you or your resident experts have not heard news of this already , considering this trial has been running for the last three weeks.

With reference to my post , why can't you people believe my post first , and then investigate , and come to a conclusuion , and not the other way round .

Your last exclusive springs to mind. Utv is coming remember. And if I'm not mistaken you were reluctant to give sources then also. Except you did say some guy high up in sky told you at the boys for toys show in the RDS. I guess this same guy gave you this piece of information also.

Are you sure this guy is not a crane driver who we could also consider to be high up in sky. Sorry couldn't resist

    Leonard ,

If you were awake , you would know that the story I broke regarding UTV was later confirmed in almost all the national parers . I know we didn't get UTV , but the story regarding a Sky/UTV deal was indeed true .

BTW , on the subject of UTV , only this week I was informed that Jimmy , ( James Murdock to you ) has only recently been made aware of our UTV delima , and is working on it .

    Satman - "Jimmy" lmao

    :D:D:D:D

Celebrity death match - "Jimmy V Granada/TV3", only one winner there, so we can all expect UTV on the Irish Sky platform by mid summer :D

As mentioned above, ring Sky again and tell them you want their top tier package(you can downgrade after a month), ask to speak to a supervisor if necessary, should do the trick.

    Aersat.

They wont dish out money if you are working 3 ft off the ground as insurance companies do not cover the installer they cover public liability IE if you damage property or hurt somebody.

there are very few employess in the satellite business 99 % are sub contract. I personally dont risk safety and some solution can usually be found. If I dont look after the customer somebody else will.

One last slag and I'm done ..........................

You can talk about debating skills , where did you get this information ? in The Beano ?

With reference to the"" landline opt out " " ( which is what it is called by people in Sky ) if you are such an expert , how come you don't know anything about this ? Obviously you are a one man band , with no insurance to work at heights , looking out for nobodys interest but your own , selling satellite in a public forum against all ethics , who bull****s his way through this forum with hearsay , and who undoubtedly has poor or no communication with the real people running Sky .

If the moderators here were doing their job , this thread ( slagging match )would be closed , PENDING confirmation of my story , and when it comes , I won't be accepting your apology , or secondhand version of events .

    I actually agree with Satman.
Just because something fails to happen for whatever reason,
it doesnt mean that the original story has been fabricated.
I worked for RTE for 4 years, and a few years back (Around the time RTE appeared on the EPG) the grapevine was buzzing that UTV got agreement from Granada to appear on the Irish EPG, and was going to happen within a few months.
For whatever reason, it didn't work out like that, and the rest is history.

    Cool yer jets man!

I don't have any problem with you being here , I just have a problem with my threads being attacked and labled as being untrue BEFORE being investigated .

Maybe they are controversial , but I am just passing on some news which should be of considerable interest to readers of this froum . ( I thought that was the idea )

This news is a fact . It is not a promise like we have had in the past . It is happening as we speak . This story will come to light as being 100% true .....................

Threre will be egg on faces .
