Mac OSX on Windows / Linux

This isn't a Windows / Unix or Mac thread, it's all of the above.

This PPC emulator claims to be (just) able to run Mac OSX on a decent machine. No Altivec support at the moment, but it features a JIT compiler.

I'll be testing this out tomorrow if I have the time.

Should be interesting, but probably very slow. Let us know how you get on. I'm presuming you have an install CD of Mac OS / OSX somewhere? Why people would want to install Mandrake PPC on an x86 and then post screenshots is beyond me.

Yeah, I have an install CD of Panther. I'll be trying that out tomorrow, hopefully.

The installation process is a bit convoluted. You need to download the Darwin CD just to create the correct partition, which is a bit manky (and, as Apple's download was down, I was stuck with a 410meg cross-platform install CD instead of the 300meg PPC one). That's downloading at the moment, and should be done by morning.

I'm running the Panther installer at the moment using PearPC ( http://pearpc.sourceforge.net/ ); and I should be able to report back on it later on today.

It's really slow on my 2.6C P4, and doesn't like me giving it any more that 128 megs of RAM (which is a killer for OSX) but it's far more responsive than I expected (using the JITC, it's REALLY slow otherwise).

It's definitely something you should check out. The guide to partitioning the hard disk didn't work, but I was able to partition it from within the OSX isntaller.

Looks good. I'd love to give it a go, but am lacking the necessary MAc OS / OS X CDs. I'm presuming they have to be bought / are not freely available for download.

I'm actually about to start adventures with Co-Operative Linux (coLinux) - running a linux kernel alongside the NT one inside Windows, just for laughs. But that is of course another story.

The install process crashed at 12% of "Processing BSD Subsystem". I restarted the installation... as I write this it has gotten beyond that point, now 65%.

It's still at that stage, unfortunately. I'm going to leave it overnight to see if it manages to complete.

Some guy claims he managed to get it installed:

He was doing it from windows in his screenshots.
I was stuck with a 410meg cross-platform install CD instead of the 300meg PPC one

Whats this specifically? Where did you get it?

I just downloaded the new version of PearPC, v0.1.1, from here:

    http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=108675&package_id=117341

The Finder crash bug is fixed, and everything seems to be running fine. This is Panther.
