Anybody recommend any good spots for rock and metal in Dublin either gigs or dj nights etc. I know a few of them already but there isn't really many.

    Cheers!

I'd have to say Bruxelles, great place altogether.
Fibbers is a dreadfull hole that I usually try and avoid.

And if you're into the whole goth/industrial/electro thing, I'd reconmend Dominion but it can vary, as they've different DJs on all the time. Sometimes it can be great, but the last time I was there the set was incredibly poor.

The website's well out-dated, but it's still there.

I thought there was akready a thread on this, except applying to the whole country instead of just Dublin. Could have been of After Hours.

ahh Fibbers can be a great place. sometimes the music is dreadful but the regulars there are far nicer than some of the elitist **** in bruxelles. theres also a big bunch of kids who've been sneaking they're way into Bruxies as of late.

everything in dublin has pretty much been mentioned. if youre into jazz check out the Mezz. Thing Mote ( at the bottom of Grafton St.) play the odd decent song, and they may become more metal as the new owner was spotted in Bruxelles.

Have to disagree there, been drinking in Fibs for 12 years now(Almost evey Saturday) and couldnt fault the place at all.Musics generally decent enough and the crowd is great.
Theres never any hassle and in all the years I think Ive only ever seen one or two fights.

Was in Dominion once or twice and really couldnt get the feel for the place at all.Could have been one or two of those bad nights you mentioned.Must give it a try again some time soon.

If you go north a bit, the Limelight, The Venue and Rosetta in Belfast are excellent. Also, the FUBAR in Letterkenny does THE BEST rock nights on a Monday. And I've heard Bruce Dickinson DJ nights, and they weren't as good as some Monday nights in the FUBAR.

Elitism? In Bruxelles?? Never got that feeling in there.

Kiddies? In Brux? Never, lol. But there's alot in Fibbers. And well, the music in Fibbers, its all the one big hits that everyone fúcking knows, week in week out. I can imagine people that only go to Fibbers believing that Pantera only have 2 songs, 5 minutes alone and Walk, cuz it's all they ever fúcking play there! And the only thing Trent Reznor ever did was Closer, etc etc.... Hell, even the same bands would be acceptable if different songs were played!

At least in Brux the DJs will generally play something whether people know it or not. Hell, try getting the Death/Meshuggah/Cynic/At The Gates/Dimmu Borgirs of this world on in Fibbers. Not a bloody chance! Thats (almost) a guarantee!

For a good metal night, with bands playing, check out The Voodoo Lounge metal nights. I loved it there the couple of times I went to check out a band that a couple of mates are in. But don't eat the pizza, you are warned!

It's not gone kaput, it's gone free!
As in, there used to be an admission fee, but there isn't one now.

Pretty much guaranteed to hear at least one song by Siouxsie And The Banshees and at least one by Sisters Of Mercy, after that it's up to the DJ.
They try to keep a balance between 1980's Goth and the more modern stuff.

always a surprising amount of metallers downstairs in the metropolitan of a saturday night for the drum and bass nights there, the faster more aggressive stuff isnt a million miles away from metal in terms of its vibe and its energy, plus the ladies have better personal hygiene than fibbers chicks.... ;)

yeah bruxelles is way better on the whole, fibbers and dominion are great for dancing when your langers and or out of it..music is better in brux but the regulars are sounder in fibbers,in fact bruxelles doesnt really have regulars
seems like revolving door syndrome,i see the odd person twice...so it really boils down to what your looking for or wats important....we REALLY need a new place to go!

the dJ's in brux are planning a new place in georges street...3 floors etc watch this space and cross your fingers

Eh ... Brux has regulars. Trust me on that. But what seems to happen is that there're cycles with the place. People go regularly for ages, and then disappear for a while, only to reappear months later etc.

That rumour's been doin the rounds for at least the last 4 years, although that's the first time I've heard the djs mentioned, as opposed to the owner of bruxelles looking to establish a new 'rock club' of sorts.

    I used to be a regular. Now I'm a regular non-regular :D

yeah i know the ppl that are there all the time, but i still wouldnt say its ripe with regualrs, fibbers is FULL of the SAME ppl EVERY week, gets boring but mostly there're pretty sound..brux doesnt have that utter repetition, which is good in a way

yeah that rumour has being doing the rounds..but eoin tells us he and H have leased the property and its in motion, but yeah it sounds like a pipe dream

be so nice to have another place like brux etc

if anyone knows of sum secret layer/batcave i havnt thought of fire ahead!

I like Bruxelles .... I'd like it a whole lot more if it wasn't for the barman in there ..... part of the reason you find people call it elitist in there is because he (and if you've been in there more than once you know who I mean) knows all the regulars and is more likely to serve them quickly than serve the non regular at all .... that and he's a bit of a prick

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,192 ✭✭✭Dathai

The barman in Eammon Dorans is bang on..but I think he's blind he served me a bottle of Budweiser on Saturday @ the air guitar competition...heh I didnt stay for too long incase they turned on the lights but then again most guys think I'm 17.
Twas a deadly day Saturday...I wonder who won the competition?

the situation is in most pubs, they will serve regulars quicker then non-regulars, its an old tradition - it goes on everywhere not just in bruxelles

Thomas Reids/the Oak *was* good. Then a few months ago they stopped it all. The owners/bouncers were freaking out constantly with any moshing going on and told the dj to not play certain types of music.

It may have reverted again in the last few months, but overnight it turned into just another homogenous Dublin 'trendy' bar, so I stopped going in there.

Shame. had some absolutely amazing nights in there with my mates.

Did anyone go to the Air Guitar competition in Eammon Dorans on Saturday?
I wasnt able to stay long..mainly because the bouncer squared up to me and told us to get out.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,655 ✭✭✭Ph3n0m

nah I was too busy actually playing a guitar to see people faking it :)

thats a shame, i was in there just over a month ago...... the music was ok, but remember it being alot more rockin earlier in the year

yeah the transformation of many of "our" pubs into trendy generic "tis good to be a cosmopolitan irish student" type bars like dorans and porterhouse, surely we spend enough money for them to remain "rock" bars,we're not that much of a small social group
