PortScanning

    Hello,

I use the Sygate personal firewall... it's the only personal firewall I've ever used and must say since I've started using it (6 odd months ago) I've had no complaints...

    My question is:
When I get port scanned by some pr1ck and get his IP address can I contact the ISP and get them to snare this person?

    For example:
    05/10/2004 17:26:43 Port Scan Minor Incoming TCP 194.125.134.141 08-00-20-00-08-00 194.125.134.189 00-00-08-00-05/10/2004 17:26:43 05/10/2004 17:26:43

I often get port scanned but never even considered doing anything about it... until now...

Port scanning isn't illegal and isn't really harmful either, you're being a bit paranoid.

    Thanks for the input Stephen.

I am aware that port scanning is harmless and not illegal, but isn't it likely I was being port scanned to see if I was vulnerable to attack?

report him/her if you like - usually its not worth it unless you see some sort of sustained attack.

If you want to report them go to http://centralops.net/co/
and put his/her address into the domain dossier - i will prob spout some ISP with a bunch of details - like who to report abuse to

    Possible scan reasons:

    1) He was scanned himself by someone who prevously had your dynamic IP.
    2) He has a machine connected to your ISP and had to try to find it remotely
    3) He's looking for machines on your ISP which provide a particular service
    4) He's going to hack your machine and probably finish up by eating your children.

1 in 4. You gotta like those odds! ;-)

Don't waste your time. The likelyhood that the ISP is going to do a thing about it is low, and if you were to report every portscan run on your machine, you'd be at it a long time.

Just make sure you're taking adequate security precautions and ignore.

your machine will be scanned many many times everyday!

    so just be secure!

there is nothing to really panic about

    but be secure!
