So who doyou think will replace Larson at Celtic, will they buy in another striker or "fill the position inhouse"

I cant see the likes of Maloney or the Sutton/Hartson combo of having the same effect as Larson

    What about Forsell?

Forsell has signed a new loan deal with the Blues so that wont happen.

I really can't see anyone replacing him in the sense of scoring so many goals, I think Heskey could join up with O'Neill again but I hope to god not!!

I'd say Celtic will have to settle for free transfers. Who all is available for free do ya know?

Its more a question of who's good enough and out of them who will go....

Kevin Phillips being linked today, 3mil pound move...dunno why he would leave Southampton....

Robbie keane would be an amazing signing but again I cant see him wanting to leave Spurs, despite their current league position.....he would cost alot too I suspect

Forsell agreed another year at Birmingham, has been succesful there this year, cant see why he wouldnt want to stay on and try to win something or qualify for europe this season...

Forlan could be on his way out of OT, is he good enough? Seems to play well after a run of games but as a replacement for larsson, I dont believe he is good enough.

Novo of Dundee has had a good season, being linked with rangers, maybe now that they got d'rso there might be room for a bid fro celtic, half a million is what dundee are looking for apparently...Think he would do well again in the SPL, not too sure about Europe....heard Valencia would be interested too tho...

Hasselbaink would be a good strong replacement, has the ability to do it week in week out, proven at european level, cant see him gelling well with Sutton or Hartson....

I think O'Neill will need to buy 2/3 players in to insure he gets the same amount of goals as larsson would give him.....

maybe: Novo, Earnshaw & Izzet...something along those lines.....Hasselbaink and Cole on loan :)

I have mentioned this a couple of weeks ago in another thread, Montella is out of contract next month and it is unlikely he'll be offered a new contract by Roma. Wiltord is another that won't be offered a new contract.

I heard a rumour linking Wiltord to Weder Bremen the Bundesliga champions

Novo mighnt be going to Rangers because of Prso and as I said in Eirebhoys thread Celtic should try and buy the nacho man .

They could try buy back Viduka?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 427 ✭✭Dewey

I think the best replacement would be Robbie Keane. I rate Keane highly and he should be with a top club. But i dont think he would want to leave Spurs cause he has been at so many clubs and he feels he needs to stay at the one club for a few seasons. but i dont think he could turn down Celtic if they came in for him cause there is Champions League. Celtic could land Keane for about £5million but i dont think they have the money to buy him.

Forlan is an OK player. He is not as good as Larsson but if he gets a run in the first team he could do well.

There is no chance of Hasselbaink going to Celtic. His wage at Chelsea is £100,000 a week and Larsson, there top earner was getting £40,000 a week so i cant see him going there.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 635 ✭✭✭johnor

If chelsea do decide to sell him tho, do they not have to pay him off the remainder of his contract anyway?? Thought this was the case....I'd say he'd be ahppy to get 40,000 although he could probably get more in spain...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 94 ✭✭paddyduff

Earnshaw would be a great signing. He would bang the goals in for fun in the league and would still have enough quality in his locker for Europe. He's done very well for wales against top defenders, so i wouldn't have too many worries about him.

Celtic should have the money to bring bought Earnshaw(2 mil) and Novo(500,000) to celtic park......Think they will need to strengthen other areas too tho, which may turn MON off spending too much up front replacing larsson....Hope they can bring in someone quality tho, I think rangers are gonna be good next season...

Where did you get that figure? I would be shocked if Hasselbaink was earning more than £70k.

johnor - If Chelsea were to release him they would probably have to pay off his wages but if Celtic were to buy him (even for £0) Chelsea pay no compensation. I couldn't see any club paying over £40k a week for a 32 year old.

Well i dunno bout that 100,00 bit....Why are leeds still paying likes of Rio, Fowler and Robbie keane?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 197 ✭✭hoolio

Not sure it would be a good move for Earnshaw though,i mean at the rate he's going he'll be playing mid-table premiership within 2 seasons and champions league within another 2/3 and imo going to Celtic could stunt his progress.Playing in Scotland hasn't exactly done wonders for Sutton/Thompson etc's careers.

Can't see Cetlic getting any really good young player or any 'big' player. I mean Montella?Robbie Keane?Wiltord? Why don't they just sign Henry,Ronaldinho,Kaka and Vieira while they're at it - it's about as likely!

TBH i'd expect them to bring in some almost unknown player from a **** league (like they did with Viduka and Larsson).Prepare for the arrival of a superstar from the Ukrainian 4th division - you've been warned

Right, a lot of times a team would have to sell players to raise funds. Their wages would be high and if they release them they have to pay off their wages and obviously don't get a transfer fee. Keane could have easily stayed at Leeds getting paid or just hope to get released rather than going to Spurs and dropping his wages from around 35k to 25k. Therefore Leeds would be willing to pay the extra 10k of his wages as they are so desperate to offload him.

    Hope you can understand that.:)

with his past history of resurrecting careers, would MON be tempted to go for the likes of Jeffers, fowler cole or yorke??

    Just a thought?

What about bergkamp for one season as well??

Well looks like Bruce has his eyes set on Heskey, so hopefully that will mean he wont be heading to Celtic Park

Everyone seems to be assuming that Hartson and Sutton will be staying. I had heard that Hartson will definitely move and Sutton is 50/50, depending on what offers he gets. That was a few months back though. Have they both recently said that they're staying?

Sutton signed a new deal same time as Thompson

Yea so surely if Hasselbaink moved to celtic on a perminent deal chelsea could pay part of his wage too?? I understand what you mean, I guess Chelsea wouldnt as they aint looking for the cash for him...just off loading him. Wonder could celtic pick up any of the leeds players..maybe bridges?

I heard MON is a big fan of Gary Kelly and may try to bring him to Celtic, Kelly is very experienced and has also done well in the CL could be a decent signing

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,889 ✭✭✭Third_Echelon

sounds like there is a lot of dillusional celtic fans here... JFH, Robbie Keane, Wiltord, Bergkamp?

Come one pull the other one.... Why would any of these players want to take a step down in their career to play in the SPL, which is a sh1t league to say the least...

Fair enough, celtic may get european football, but that doesn't make up for the fact that week in week out, you are playing against amatuer-like opposition which isn't too far away from the talent in the irish league!!!!

I think Heskey would fit in well at celtic and in scotland.. i think thats more his level....

Dont get me wrong... i like to see celtic do well, but they are never going to be able to attract big name players while they are in the scottish league... (an argument for another day)

    Quotes from Rivaldo:

Rivaldo: "I am delighted that Celtic fans are going crazy about me maybe playing for them.
"I am really happy to learn that people in Scotland, especially the Celtic fans, are excited about the idea of me playing there.
"They have a very hot, fanatical support and that is important to me.
"Celtic are an important club in Europe and I am honoured to be considered as a possible player for them."
He added: "I am waiting for Celtic to make another offer and get an agreement with my agents.
"If I'm to play for either Celtic or Bolton it depends what they want to do next.
"If either of the two clubs increase their offer things may happen quicker than expected.
"So far I have had offers from Celtic, Bolton, Olympiakos, Japan, Qatar and a club from Spain.
"At the moment I have not decided where I am going to play next season.
"I am not in a hurry to make a decision and I can comfortably wait until August.
"I have taken some time off to consider my thoughts because I want to make the right career choice.
"But it is also a possibility that I will make a decision this week if the right offer arrives.
"I have to admit that the offers from Celtic and Bolton are very serious and very much the same.
"For me it is not a problem to play for Celtic or Bolton.
"Bolton are becoming a good club in England but they will not play European football next season.
"If I signed for Bolton my challenge would be to help them qualify for a European competition.
"With Celtic it is a completely different story because they are a club that has become regulars in the Champions League.
"I have played in the Champions League before and that is obviously a powerful reason for me to consider playing for Celtic because they will play in it next year again.
"But I can categorically deny that I have signed any paperwork with Bolton.
"What Bolton are saying is not true. If they have claimed that they have in their possesion a fax signed by me why don't they show it?
"I have not sent a fax to anyone.
"I want to make it clear that I have not signed anything with Bolton, or with anyone.
"The same thing happenned earlier this year when a team from Saudi Arabia claimed they had a fax signed by me confirming that I would play there."

I hope he's not just using us to get the best possible offer from Bolton.

I don't know, ask the players. Players who have "taken a step down" to the Old firm in recent years (I'm sure I've left a load out):

Tore Andre Flo, Norwegian International. Chelsea to Rangers - £12mil.
John Hartson, Welsh International. Coventry to Celtic - £6.5mil.
Chris Sutton, Premiership winner. Chelsea to Celtic - £6mil.
Paul Lambert, Champions League winner. Borussia Dortmund to Celtic - £2.5mil.
Dado Prso, Crotian international and CL finalist. Monaco to Rangers - Bosman.
Boumsong, rejected offers from premiership clubs. Auxerre to Rangers - Bosman.
Mikel Arteta, Spanish U-21 International. Barcelona to Rangers - £6mil.
Ronald de Boer, Dutch international regular. Barcelona to Rangers - £4.5mil.

A few of them players above may not have been wanted by their previous clubs but either are Wiltord, Hasselbaink and Montella. Spurs have a load of forwards and who's to say their new manager will want to keep Keane? Bergkamp is staying at Arsenal for another year AFAIK but if he wasn't there wouldn't be much of a shock if he joined one of the Old Firm clubs.

Amoroso arrives at Celtic Park for a trial

Third_Echelon - Hopefully this will show you that high profile players are more than willing to play in Scotland. Amoroso is a quality player but his only problem is he doesn't score too much for a forward. This is getting very exciting for the two Old Firm clubs.:)

I have to agree Dewey on Robbie Keane coming. IMO I could see it happening. Spurs already having 3 other forwards.. Keane wouldnt want to be a rational player like he was at Leeds and Inter. He would be perfect for the role as the 'new Larrson' - especially this season, as you could see Keane playin brilliant in the role behind the main Striker, linking the midfield and forward line . Fingers crossed.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 197 ✭✭hoolio

TBH i think that says more about Amoroso then it does about Celtic.

And Robbie Keane moving to Celtic would be a terrible move for him, great for the club.I mean has there ever been a player who has gone to Scotland and actually progressed into something better? Sutton? Hartson? Thompson? For Irelands sake and for Robbie Keane's sake i hope he stays in England and TBH i think he can do alot better then Totteham (Liverpool anybody?)

And did you notice that you are talking about players who have 'taken a 'step down' to the old firm'.Don't you see thats the whole problem. The very fact you are talking about the Old Firm teams and not the League itself. There are 4 matches that matter each year - the 4 derby's and beyond that it's countless rainy days playing the likes of Kilmarnock and Motherwell. Not the stuff of champions.

And dude thats a list of the washed up,the gob****es and the cast aside. But TBH i can't understand Prso wanting to come to the SPL,i mean FFS i expect him to have a Champions League winners medal if a few weeks time and he's going to Rangers?Boumsong too could do alot better, dont know why he doesn't move to a proper team.

TBH i cant remember the last time a player even approaching 'World Class' played in the SPL.I mean i'm a Celtic fan but even I don't pretend Larsson was ever world class.Best player in the SPL by a mile but still not world class.I mean can you actually imgaine him playing for Arsenal/Madrid etc?

Yep Thompson has progressed as a player, he was ok at Villa but nothing special and he certainly never got near an england callup when he was at Villa Park!!

He has come on leaps and bounds at Celtic

To answer you're question, yes, yes and yes. Add Lennon, Mjallby, Balde, Larsson, in fact nearly every player that MON signed for Celtic have progressed, both at club level and on the international stage. Mjallby can't even get a game for Celtic but still captain's Sweden, the same can be said about Hedman who started against Portugal. Varga is a regular in the Slovak side, I don't think he was when with Sunderland. Hartson, when fit, is one of the first on the Welsh team sheet. We all know what Larsson can do on the international stage and he plays against the Scottish minnows every week. Petrov is one of Bulgaria's best players. Valgaeren can't make the Celtic team but still plays for Belgium.

Just because Sven Goran fatface doesn't rate players who play in Scotland doesn't mean players don't progress in Scotland. Very few players (if any) get worse by playing in Scotland and if Keane never improved by playing in Scotland and the CL, we still have a quality player for Ireland.
If you are an actual Celtic fan I can't believe you would say something like that. Larsson is world class (he scored 8 goals in 10 matches in the last world cup qualifiers and won the golden boot award in 2001) and he would easily fill in for Henry or Ronaldo if they were injured. Celtic actually have a world class player on trial ATM. He may not be on fire atm but he certainly was in Italy and we all know how good MON is at resurrecting careers.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 498 ✭✭Harry2001

Larsson is a very good striker but not world class - his record of 24 goals in 73 internationals proves that.

But there is no doubt that he has had a fantastic career in Scotland with Celtic and will be hard to replace.

What about Andy Cole as a replacement? I think he would score with ease in Scotland

OK, a player doesn't have to be super all his career to be world class. So, lets say Larsson hit his peak in 2001, during the World Cup 2002 campain (qualifiers and finals) he scored 11 in 14. He hasn't played since so that means previous to that he scored 13 in 59, he wasn't world class at the time though. See what I mean?(its a biased opininion but doesn't mean I'm wrong). Also, he is one of the highest scorers ever in European competition with 44 goals in 74 matches, (Raul being the only player of the currently active players that is ahead of him on 45 from 85).

So could a lot of players but we need someone who can score against top sides in Europe.

Sorry, I missed this comment from the person who calls himself a Celtic fan, Hoolio.;)

Would you believe Celtic played 16 (including CL qualifiers) European matches this season and even more last season. They also play Rangers 5/6 times a year and are usually involved in at least 1 cup final. The likes of Hearts and Dunfermline may not have the biggest names in the world but they are certainly no walkover for any club. Hearts were all over Bordeaux when they won 1-0 at home in the UEFA cup this season and I'm sure they would put a fight against anyone. I don't think it will be long before the other Scottish teams get in a few decent players and raise the standard of competition in the league.

I am 10 times more an Ireland fan than a Celtic fan so if I thought a move to Celtic was bad for Robbie I wouldn't want him to come to us.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 197 ✭✭hoolio

He has come on leaps and bounds at Celtic
Has he really or is he just playing against poorer opposition?Likewise for Sutton/Hartson.And don't get me started on Neil Lennon.
Rino Gattuso - Joined Ac Milan after Rangers
    Got me there.Forgot about him.
If you are an actual Celtic fan I can't believe you would say something like that
Sorry, I missed this comment from the person who calls himself a Celtic fan
Don't start getting personal.Just because i don't worship the ground Larsson walks on means i'm not a 'true' fan?Get real. This whole 'Larsson=god' thing pisses me off greatly thats all.I'm just as much of a supporter as you or anyone else but i seem to have misplaced my rose tinted glasses, thats all.
and he would easily fill in for Henry or Ronaldo
Oh wait - there they are!:D
So could a lot of players but we need someone who can score against top sides in Europe.
Can Larsson? This season he scored an earth shattering six in europe.3 in the Uefa cup and 3 in the champions league. In the Uefa cup he managed to score twice against FK Teplice (wow!) and once against Villareal, zero against Barca. In the Champions league he got another 3 - one against each of Anderlecht,Kaunas and Hungaria.

So just to recap this almost world class striker managed to score against Fk Teplice,Anderlecht,Villareal,Kaunas and Hungaria. He failed to score whatsoever against Lyon and Munich and Barcelona - see the pattern.

Villareal are the only good team he scored against. You say Celtic need someone who can score against the top sides in Europe?I agree with you

Don't get me wrong,Larsson is class but that is only in the context of the Scottish league. He won the golden boot - whoop de feckin doo.Who won it the year before him btw?Thats right - Kevin Phillips!Who won it a year or two ago?Mario Jardel,Where are they now?

And while i'm in a good rant lets talk about the offer of europe - look at those 16 matches - 6 of them were the pointless minnow crushing matches which leaves 10 proper European matches.Add on say 5 for derbys + maybe a cup final and you get 15 matches worth playing. Now what quality player in their right mind would move to Scotland to play 15 matches a season?

And as for more Scottish clubs coming up its not going to happen.Scotland is a feeder league, like Holland ,and looks set to always be.A few big clubs buy all the good young players from the other clubs.dominate totally and prevent any true competition.None of the other clubs have the money to buy/pay decent wages anyway.

Now i'd tired, and a bit pissy so sorry if the above is a bit of a rant that makes not much sense.

John Hartson- The SPL is his level... quality... i dont think so..
Chris Sutton - Couldn't hack it in england.. took the easy option and went to scotland
Paul Lambert- Homesick more than likely - not a world class player by any stretch of the imagination...
    Dado Prso - Who?
    Boumsong - Mad?
Mikel Arteta - Also a bit mad? not exactly quality player..
Ronald de Boer - past it... the SPL is like the MLS for these type of players... i would stretch to say that the MLS is a better league than scotland...

All of the players above are average at best and wouldn't even make it anywhere near getting into any of the top 5 premiership teams.. and if you think otherwise you are mad....

Sorry but do you not remember the SAS, i.e Shearer and Sutton for blackburn??

Sutton is a good player who would probably make it into a lot of mid table sides in the premier league, I'm not saying hes world class, but certainly could HACK it in Engalnd.

yes i do remember his blackburn days.... this is when he was in his prime scoring habit...

But do you remember him at chelsea... he was beyond sh1t.. couldn't score for sh1t.. this is when he realised he was past it and couldn't hack it...

He had a bad spell but that doesn't make him ****, many players have a bad spell at a club.

You would wonder how Celtic have done so well in the SPL and EURPOE with all these so called "****" players:confused:

Martin O'Neill must be some manager;)

They may not be playing agianst the best teams, but that sort of consistency is a great achievement in any league.

They have done very well in Europe so I think it's fair to say they have better than
average players and a good manager

So just to recap this almost world class striker managed to score against Fk Teplice,Anderlecht,Villareal,Kaunas and Hungaria. He failed to score whatsoever against Lyon and Munich and Barcelona - see the pattern.
This has to be one of the most stupid things I have ever heard. Guess how many goals Raúl scored this season in the CL? 2 :D against Partizan Belgrade and Monaco. OMG Raúl isn't world class any more. BTW I seem to remember Larsson getting a brace of assists against Lyon, that doesn't count for anything does it? I am just shocked that I am debating this with a fellow Celtic fan, I don't think Arsenal fans would play down Henry or Bergkamps goals.

Please read over my post again, I never said these players were world bloody class. I was replying to comment:
"Why would any of these players want to take a step down in their career to play in the SPL"

Flo - At the time of his move to Rangers he was a very good player just like Wiltord and Hasselbaink are now. I don't think a team would pay £12mil for an average player.

Hartson - For WH he played 73, scored 33. For Wimbledon played 54 scored 21. For Coventry played 12 scored 6. He was England's top scorer in 97/98. He was Britain's most expensive teenager when he joined Arsenal, he joined WH for a record fee and Wimbledon for a club record fee. I think he was also Celtic's record signing. Why did he take a "step down" and join Celtic?

    Sutton - I won't repeat what Irish1 said.

Lambert - I didn't say he was world class but Dortmund to Celtic is surely a step down?

Prso - Haven't you been watching the CL this year, remember his 4 goals against Deportivo? He's going to be playing in the CL final this month and was sure to be offered a new contract with Monaco but he chose Rangers.

    Boumsong - I Haven't a clue if he's mad TBH.

Arteta - He is a quality player, not as much this season though. He would certainly attract a lot of attention if he was put up for sale.

Ronald de Boer - Past It? :D He joined Rangers in 2000 when he was still one of the first on the Dutch team sheet.

Third_Echelon - You seem to forget that the likes of Sutton and Hartson have done extremely well against the likes of Juve in the CL.

the point is though that any player going to scotland is taking a step down in their career... there is no challenge.. of course they are going to get european football.. 1 of 2 teams wins the league every year and the other gets into the champs league anyway...

Juve haven't been exactly a good team this year... a shadow of their former selves... their CL results were poor, so any team that played against them would have had a good game...

The whole point of my replies was because of this:
"sounds like there is a lot of dillusional celtic fans here... JFH, Robbie Keane, Wiltord, Bergkamp?"

I showed you that there was players willing to move from the top leagues to the SPL. I'm glad thats sorted now.

id very much doubt if any of the players mentioned there will go to scotland this season...

any players "willing" to go to scotland from big leagues are coming to the end of their career or have lost form and looking for some easy target teams to score or perform well against...

scotland will never be able to pull the players like arsenal, man utd, chelsea or any of the big european sides....

But Amoruso is 29 so he isn't coming to the end of his career and he is having little problem with form. The reason has trials with Celtic is because he has no club. Prso, Flo, Hartson, Prso, Boumsong and de Boer didn't drop in form or weren't coming to the end of their careers. Wiltord, Hasselbaink and Montella are nearly certain to leave their clubs at the end of the season so I don't see any reason why they can't be linked with Celtic. Don't worry, I know we can't sign a lot of the players that the top clubs can.

"The reason has trials with Celtic is because he has no club...."

Is that because nobody else will take him or consider him good enough?

Its the same with rivaldo... nobody else will consider him so scotland will... he's thinking.. i'll go to celtic.. play a few games and get paid a lot of money for celtic having the privilage of having me... getting ripped off there if that happens...

"Wiltord, Hasselbaink and Montella are nearly certain to leave their clubs at the end of the season so I don't see any reason why they can't be linked with Celtic"

you can link whoever you like with a club.. until you see them kicking a ball in your colours i wouldn't read much into it...

I don't know a lot about Amoroso but a player that cost Parma £21mil and scored a goal every other game for Dortmund is good enough for most clubs.

    MON interested in Kanoute :)

i can assure you one thing, MON will sign a high profile player to replace Larsson.

If a club is playing in the Champions League and can afford the wages of the player, there is every chance that players will want to sign for them, no matter what league they are in.
